Hi all. I am new here and I am excited that I am about to purchase my first Samurai.

I am looking at a 91 convertible with 3 documented owners and less than 50k miles. All is fantastic, but I am concerned because this model should have come with EFI, but this one has a carb. It's also a source of problems because after the engine warms up, gas flow is interrupted.

Now, I don't believe this to be a deal killer because anything can be fixed, but why would anyone convert an EFI to a carb???

Also, if anyone can tell me what kind of carb from the image I greatly appreciate it. It would appear to be stock were it not for the ordinary hose clamps.

Not sure where you got the idea that your 91 Sami should have EFI
Mine does not have EFI but does have TBI ( throttle body injection )
If yours has an ECU, as mine does, that may be where your problem is.
In the owners manual there will be a chart telling you how to get and read the codes the ECU puts into the check engine light.
That may tell you where your problem is.
From the looks of your pix, you have a bone stock 1.3 Suzuki with stock carb set-up.
Many knowledgable owners on this site. They may be able to help you.

First - EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection - comes in two flavours, TBI - Throttle Body Injection, and MPI - Multi-Port Injection, with the essential difference being that TBI systems have one injector in the throttle body, and MPI systems have one injector per cylinder - so technically, your TBI system is EFI.

Second - depending on what market the vehicle was built for, a 91 Samurai could have a conventional carburettor, an electronic feedback carburettor or fuel injection - US model Samurais are amongst those that shipped with the electronic feedback carburettor, and they are equipped with ECUs, so the presence of an ECU does not guarantee that is is EFI.

Last - it's hard to see what's under that air intake - you need a better picture if you want a definitive answer.

Oh - to answer your question - why would anyone convert EFI to carb - EFI systems can be a pain in the butt to diagnose & repair, especially if they fail out in the back of beyond, old school guys are often more comfortable with carbs, and if SMOG tests are not an issue, they will convert for the peace of mind.

That is definitely not a '91 U.S model FI setup. The coil, air intake horn, and emission stuff looks like it is carbed.

Finbar - where are you located and what is the VIN (don't meed the last 5 digits)?

Thanks all. This is a USA 91 model. VIN = JS4jC31CXM41....

I was confused when I read about the history of the Samurai that in 1990 fuel injection replaced the carb'd model. Didn't pick up on the nuance of TBI vs. EFI. Thanks for that.

I do understand how a carb would be better if you are way back in the woods and have a problem. Makes perfect sense now!!

Attached is the only better pic that I have.

I am going to make my decision today on whether to but this one or wait for the perfect specimen to present itself. I really want black, this one is white. However, the white looks awesome with black trim.

Here is the VIN info, which does confirm that the vin number is for a 91 but something is fishy here as it is not the regular TBI for 91-95 shown in the photo.

Does the engine have a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the cylinder head at the very back on the passenger side? FI engines have an electric fuel pump in the gas tank, but there is slight possibility that an early 91 might have a block-off plate there.

If it actually has 50k miles on it and has the carb, I would be suspicious that the original engine and FI was pulled and replaced by an older carbed engine.

The fuel pump is in the gas tank. That is why I hesitate to purchase at the current price.

I fully understand that I cannot expect a 1991 to be perfect, but I want to understand what I am getting in to.

I intend to modify it, but i wasn't planning to do major engine work until next year. I am banking on doing a fuel pump replacement and fuel injection work to bring it up to a daily driver until I have a plan for an engine swap.

Since it appears that the fuel intake and ignition is from an earlier year and if you have emissions inspections, you may have a problem getting it to pass since that '91 model is supposed to have fuel injection and electronic ignition.
