Hey everyone. I have a 93 sidekick with ecm # 33920-58b60. Can I use a different ecm to get my sidekick running? I can’t find the exact one I need anywhere!

I can't answer your question about cross referencing different ECM units, but I can offer a different solution.

Repairs ECMs and other auto electronics. Turn around is good. Give him a call or email; he usually responds pretty quickly.

He fixed mine for my 89 Sidekick. It's been a month or so and it has been working well.

Welcome to the forum. I suspect that your engine does not start and you believe that the ECU is an issue?? Have you removed the ECU from the car? If so, open the ECU up, and see if you have 3 large capacitors that say Rubycon on the side (or post a photo of your ECU). Normally the ECU stops working when those caps have dried up or leaked, and it’s a $5 fix to replace the caps. Post #34 here gives the details of those caps, as well as a source to buy them.
If you buy the caps this way, any computer guy can solder them in for you and clean the board, if there hasn’t been too much damage.
Otherwise, there are people on ebay where you send your ECU in, and they do this for you.

This is GREAT advise. First, figure out what the problem is. That might take some time and effort. If it is the ECM you have options -- junk yard, do-it-yourself, rebuild. Either way, keep in touch -- and consider a spare if you want to keep it going long term -- like me!!!!!!!!

DO NOT start replacing things Willy-Nilly assuming they are the problem. Figure out what is the problem FIRST!!!! If it is a BAD ECU, it can shut everything down!

If you search using 33920-58B30 (which is for the 4 door/16v manual tranny) you should find some hits on the internet. Other than that, the 33920-58B40 (for the auto tranny) should also run your car.. They also had a 58B60 and 58B70, but these would be for California cars - I don’t know if they’d run your car. You may want to post over at RhinoPower Forum. Rhino would be able to tell you what other ECU models would run your car.

By the way, did the ‘module experts’ return your ECU to you? If so, you may want to try to bring it into your local computer geek. The module experts only change caps (actually a $5 fix, for which they charge a lot more). It might be interesting to see if your computer guy could clean up your board.

There is an extra ground on the CA ECU circuit. And your 93 car will also have the thermoprobe in your EGR circuit, that the ECU will look for. The federal ECU’s for the 16v auto tranny will work and run your car (with codes for 51 for the EGR and 53 for the ECU ground, but there are possible work around)…BUT, in CA it’s illegal to do this…..

I would seriously post over on Rhino’s forum, in the link above. For example, the 95 federal cars had the thermoprobe. So, would a 33920-70EC0, for the 95 auto federal auto tranny work in your car? Would you only have to add the addition ground for that to work? Rhino will KNOW these answers. Your mechanic will NOT.
