Hi - I am new here and haven't even been to the intro site yet. Later. I wanted to post this warning quickly. I purchased a SX4 jxl manual trans. back in NOV. I do my own oil changes,and at about 2000 kms I noticed the oil going down. I ended up changeing oil early because I had lost about 1 litre. I would have topped it up but my dealer could not tell me if the factory oil was a breakin variety. I run QUAKER STATE 5/30. I am now at 6700 kms and am watching the oil go down again. This is hopefully due to the initial breakin period. I urge you folks to keep a close eye on you engine oil levels. Let me know if your rigs are in the same boat as mine

You're quite sure there isn't a physical leak? That seems like a lot of oil to lose even though it's probably "within spec" from the perspective of a car company trying to avoid a warranty issue. I'd be curious if the same thing happened with a good synthetic like Mobil1.

I'm going in for my 1st oil change next Monday but I haven't had issues like you describe. Looks like there is a problem somewhere...hope all gets fixes ASAP.

Speaking of oil ...

In answer to RITZ,s question,no,there is no external leak. Also I tend to shy away from synthetic oil. Some people think it's better than sliced bread,but I have used regular QUAKERSTATE oil for 30 plus years with out any problems and am happy with that. I also caution useing non recommended oil in a new engine still under warranty. Warranty usually doesn't cover you if an oil analysis shows that non recommended oil was used. I also had a bad experience with SLICK 50 and a new 1980 FORD pickup. I have come up with a theory about my oil consumption. For some reason the oil level goes down to the half way mark on the dipstick and then seems to stop. The op. manual says 4.5L for an oil fill,but my engine takes 5L to bring it up to the full line. Some engines, when overfull, will push out the oil thru the breather until it has found it's happy place level. I work as a mechanic on JD. lawn & garden products and have seen this happen once or twice. JD also had a dipstick replacement program on one model of mower. The dipstick was manufactured incorrectly and was giving a false measurement. Could my dipstick be to long? ( Let me rephrase that) Could the length of the engine oil dipstick on my SX4 be incorrect?

As I was reading, I was thinking the same thing as you've determined...too much oil BUT per the dip stick. The issue is more comon than you think, and I'd bet money on your theory being correct. ;)

My Toyota pickup had the incorrect dipstick, and it took almost a quart more than the manual recommended to bring it to the full mark. Eventually they sent out a sticker to revise the manual, and a new dipstick. I run mine per their recommendation and it is never quite to the full mark, even with the new dipstick. I've also seen variations with replacement stamped steel oil pans, but I think the SX4 has a cast aluminum pan, so there is probably less variation with the casting - not sure.

:confused:Well I have now seen this problem for the 2nd time. My car has 31000 miles. Two oil changes ago I drove to 7K before the oil change, but just about that time I stated getting a flickering oil light. I checked the oil level and it took 4 quarts to bring it up to the full level. When I broiught it in for the oil change I asked the mechanic to check for leaks. He said there was no leaks, so I told him then they messed up when they did my oil change. Now it has been 3k miles since my recent oil change and I checked the oil level today. I needed to add 2 quarts. So to me it appears that something is going on with my oil or my mechanic. :confused:

A suggestion. Check it more frequently and change oil at 3-4K if you want her to last.

You MAY have lost that oil if you are burning it out the tailpipe. It may not even be noticable, but over 7K miles of driving you could be loosing it there. If not there, then it has to be leaks or initial fill level too low. :(

Check your PCV system for oil. Not seent his on a Zuk yet but Neons are famous for this. Poke around and see if you can see some in the intake. Also check your plugs and see if you are getting oil fouled.

Checking more often is sensisble, but loosing several quarts in 7000 miles on a new car is not normal. I will check the PVC and plugs. How many quarts does the engine hold full?
