Hey ya'll -

I just completed a conversion (95 16v sidekick into an 88.5 sammy) and I'm having a hard time getting it to run right. Problem I'm having is a check engine light with fault codes 34 & 23. Google says those are MAF and IAT. I checked the ground and power to the MAF. They are good. I checked the signal wire from the MAF to the ECM and it's 0.49v and steady no matter if I move the throttle or not. From what I've read it should increase when I increase throttle - but it doesn't. So I'm guessing I have a bad MAF. I ordered one from eBay and it should be here in a week.

My question is, are the symptoms I'm having typically related to a bad MAF:

VERY hard to start
Idle is crappy at best
Dies after a couple mins
Sounds like a misfire is happening (but I could be mistaken)
Smells like it's running lean or rich (I don't know the difference)
It seems like the throttle response is rather slow
It has back fired a couple times (either when trying to start or when it dies)
Sounds like my exhaust is louder than it should be (I know that statement sounds absurd but it actually is loud)
Getting some minor smoking

I've checked the plug wires, they are connected in the 1-3-4-2 firing order. I've checked and double checked all my grounds. All my wires are connected as they should be given it does start eventually. So I'm wondering if this sounds like a bad MAF or do I have other issues?

Second question, when I get my new sensor later this wee and plug it in, how do I actually get the CEL to go out? Will it go out on its own? I have tried the battery disconnect thing - it doesn't work. I still have the light on and the same codes. I saw on some Sidekick posts that guys say to remove the dome light fuse to clear ECM memory. Since this is a Sammy conversion, that's probably not going to work. I also no longer have the switch for the samurai check engine light under the dash connected since I no longer have the samurai computer installed.

Anyone else who's been through conversion headaches and had similar issues, please advise if I am on the right path. I'm at a loss.

Thanks in advance.

Turns out it was the MAF sensor. Plugged new one in. Started right up. No more CEL. Runs smooth as a watch now.
