hi folks.
well i have been told by the mechanic that i need a new carb. he couldn't locate one but i found the weber carb that many of you had talked about in previous forums. i told the mechanic about it and he said it would require too much modifying and it would be beyond his comfort level. i haven't a clue about these things so any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. do i need to look for the same model car at an auto wrecker and hope there is a usable carburator on it? i am in canada.

If converting to a Weber is beyond his comfort level I would question his qualifications and ability to accurately assess drivability issues. Weber conversions are pretty straight forward. It should come as a kit for a lick over $200 and have all the major stuff included. Any somewhat competent mechanic should be able to handle it without to much trouble. I really like the Webers on any vehicle I have used them on, good equipment and very tweakable if need be.

thank you for the scoop. the weber kits up here are 510 bucks for the cheapest i can find. i found a rebuilt hitachi for 950 bucks as well. most places i have taken the samurai to won't even touch it. they don't want to work on carbs.
sure wish i took mechanics classes at some point in my earlier years.

I guess I have the advantage of cutting my teeth on carbs, conventional points and manual transmissions. These are the easiest things to work on but maybe a lot of guys started wrenching after EFI and distributorless ign systems became the standard. Just plug in a code scanner and chances are you will have your diagnosis. For these old beasts you get to do things by ear and by feel often, but replacing a carb is really not difficult, even the conversion kit. I would bet you can find a youtube video of someone doing it and decide if it's something you may want to tackle.

I have seen the kits on ebay for around $225 here in the US. Where are you that they are so damn expensive? I thought you might be talking about pesos when I first saw the number! :cool:

hello,
i am in canada on the west coast.
had to go with the expensive rebuilt hitachi.
the car is idling high right now and chugs and loses power going uphill especially in third gear. the mechanic suggested i drive it fora bit and then he'll do some adjustments. can the adjustments be done at home?

I'm not knowledgeable on the OEM Hitachi, but if I'm not mistaken it has a brain box inside the cab, not sure if this might be coming into play here or not or what testing procedures exist for it.

My hope is that someone adept with this system will chime in and help out, I have some serious reservations about your mechanic having you drive it around like that, it should run fairly well right out of the box unless something else is amiss. I cant find the manual I downloaded but I'm thinking I saw a comprehensive troubleshooting guide there that requires a multi meter and vacuum to test the various fuel management systems. I hope someone can correct me if I'm wrong or elaborate on testing.
