After a weekend in Glamis my Samurai started running bad. It is idling high, black smoke is coming out the exhaust, and there is a lot of carbon build up on the plugs. The carb is only about a year old and I just put a new coil, cap, and rotor on it, so I don't think it's an ignition problem. I've checked the choke and it seems to be working just fine. Now I'm stumped.

Any ideas on what else I can check?? I would hate to have to take to a mechanic, but I can't figure it out.

This problem is usually ignition :

Check the gaps on your spark plugs.

Try pulling each spark plug one at a time hooking it back up to the high tension lead and setting the threads on an appropriate ground then have someone crank it over so you can see if the spark is strong enough.

check the cap rotor points for any signs of arcing or bluish residue

If it is fuel try:

changing gas stations

add methyl hydrate (just to see if your fuel is bad)

Check your fuel air mixture needle

Take the carb apart to make sure the float isn't sticking

So does the black smoke mean it's running too rich?? I checked the gap and it was over by about .005". I put them back to spec and it still runs ruff. The plugs were really covered in carbon, so tomorrow I will try some new ones.
If that doesn't work I'll check the float.

Well I took the carb apart and there is sand in the bowl. I tried to clean it out the best I could and put it back together. Now it will idle at 800 rpm, but it stalls about 10 seconds after I adjust it and it won't start unless I set the idle to a higher rpm. Before I could remove the idle screw and it still ideled at 2000rpm. It also dies after I rev it. It will idle at the higher rpm, I give hit the gas and it runs OK, it misses a llittle, and when I let off it dies.

The float level is good and it is getting enough spark, by the way. The carb sounds like it's coughing. It sounds like the dentist sucking the spit out of your mouth.

I take it apart again and start unscrewing what I think are the jets. The brass parts that unscrew with a flat head and have numbers on them. I unscrew one that is the farthest to the left, facing the engine, and there is anouther jet below it. I thought this was strange and I see that this jet is damaged on top and I can't unsrew it.

I bought this carb new a little over a year ago and have never had it apart. And everything worked great until a few weeks ago, so I don't think this was the problem.

I don't know what to do now. Napa has a rebuild kit for $47, but I've never rebuilt a carb before and I'm not even sure this will fix the problem. PLus I have this broken jet that will be a pain to get out. I did rebuild the bottom end 5 months ago, but It has been running great until now. I can get a new carb for $300 or take it to a shop.


Any suggestions??? :unsure:
