Good afternoon,

I'm new to this forums stuff but am in need of some help. I am an owner of a 1987 suzuki samurai hardtop and have a question about it. When i bought it the battery with it was cracked so i got a brand new one. Had absolutly no problems with it till a week ago. One of my headlights has always been dimmer then the other one so i decided to switch the plug because the plug was corroded. I did so and now the battery drains.

Was thinking possibly a bad ground or wrong wiring on the new plug?

It is unlikely for either a bad ground or an incorrectly wired headlamp connector to cause battery drain.

I agree with fordem.....
When you have it running put a voltmeter/multitester to the battery to see if it's charging. should show approx 13.5 volts +/- If yes then make sure those battery terminals are really clean. after that if you know how to do an amp draw, check to see if the battery is being drawn when sitting and everything is shut off.(don't just drag the cable end across the battery to look for spark.my friend did that and lost an eye when it blew up in his face)
Your original one headlight dim the other normal was more than likely the ground on the bad headlight

Most Suzuki vehicles use headlights with a switched ground, there is a constant +12V supplied to each headlamp and the headlights share a common ground, located under the dash, via the combination switch - there's no way for a bad ground to cause one headlight to be dimmer than the other.

I agree. Check for proper voltage at the headlight, first with the lights off and then with the lights on. Also, check for resistance to ground on the switched leg at the headlight in the same way. This will tell you whether to look at the supply circuit or the return circuit.

As for the draining battery, after following Joe Z's advice, if your battery is good, the charging system is good and you have a draw at the battery, you will need to go through the truck and disconnect stuff until the draw goes away.

When my 88 acted that way it turned out to
be a bad connection in the ignition switch.
Changed the little pig tail behind the
key, on the column.
The battery stopped draining when it was
changed out.
Use electrilitic grease on the connections
to the headlights.
If this is not solved then change the
lights with ones you know are good,
one at a time.

Arlo - it sounds like you had a different problem - if your battery stopped draining when it was changed, the battery was defective and not holding a charge.

Sorry !
Just read my blurb, it was unclear that
when the pig tail from the ignition was
changed out the same battery stopped
draining. This lead me to think the
problem was the pigtail not the battery.
What do they say...'my bad !'
