I'll try to explain this as best I can. Have been workiing on the lights on my new toy. Thought I had found a problem last week when I found a nine wire plug unplugged under the dash. The turn signals were working before I plugged it in. I was working on the brake lights at the time. The brake lights started working, but the turn signals stopped. Blowing 10 amp fuses. Rigged up a light for a fuse and started tracing wires. Traced the problem to a sending unit that is located on the transmission (drivers side) Further checking a wiring diagram, found it to be the back up lights sending unit. Back up lights and turn-signals share the same fuse. Unplugged the sending unit and the turn-signals now work. This now brings up another problem. I will need the back-up lights to get the vehicle inspected. I said all that to ask this. The sending unit ohm's closed whether the trans is in reverse or not. I believe the unit is bad because it is also a dead short to chassis ground. This is what is causing the fuse to blow. Could somebody cross-check this for me? The plug is on the main wiring harness right behind the distributor. The sending unit can be seen on the left side of the trans...follow the wires up and unplug the plug and ohm the plug from the sending unit across the terminals and to chassis ground. This would be a big help to me. I'm just hoping if the unit is bad I can find another.

Both switches on the transmission are made to carry 12v current and there should not be any continuity to the chassis ground. If you have any continuity to the chassis ground, then either the wiring is shorting out or the switch is bad.

Since my transmission is broken apart right now I was able to test the switches. The only continuity I found was between the 2 leads at the plug when the switch was engaged by the rods on the shift rail.

Don't have any suggestions on how to check the wiring or the switches without removing the transmission. Sorry.

As a side note, I have installed a toggle switch across the two leads for the reverse switch plug so that I could turn on my backup lights whenever the ignition was on. Real handy to get the attention of the car behind you when slowing way down for bumpy railroad crossings and such.

Great idea!
Drivers are always crowding my Zuk from behind 'cause it's not fast enough for them. I'll be adding an extra switch when I fix MY reverse lights!

Thanks HAPTOWN. After more checking I am pretty sure the Back-up light switch is bad (shorted). I will be rebuilding the engine & transmission in july and will probably replace both switchs.

the plug behind your dist. has 3 wires 2 are black/ green and 1 is blue/black? what plugs unto that my has been cut , no back up lts as well , thnx

Gardia55....There are two plugs on the wiring loom that runs across the top of the firewall. These two plugs are located right behind the Dist. The plug that goes to the back-up switch on the transmission is female plug (green plug on my Sami) two wires red and yellow. The wires from the plug to the switch are both black. The other plug (male) goes to the fifth gear switch on the transmission. The wires are green with red runner and black. The wires from plug to switch are black. One side of these plugs have 12 volts. The switch on the transmission is an on/off switch.

The backup lights and turn signals use the same fuse. Make sure the fuse is good. Even if you pull the fuse out and it looks good try another fuse. *Had a fuse that looked good but was bad...what a PITA that was to find.* If you haven't yet....purchase a good Ohm/volt meter for trouble shoot purpose. If you need a wiring schematic for T/S, go to ZUKI OFFROAD and click technical and then to wiring diagrams....pick the one you need, it will load and then you can expand it to view the area you need. Hope this helps.

Hate to bring this up from the dead but I am having the same issue. Was the back up switch bad? (Grounded by the trans) or was there a short to ground elsewhere?

I had the same problem once. First you should test and see if the back up light bulbs are burnt out. If nothing is wrong, check and see if any of your fuses are bad. Good to check with a multimeter or ohms reader. If none of the fuses are burnt, check the back up light/4wd switch on the transmission. Take the switch out. There is a small plastic part on the switch that you could depress, if this piece is cracked or broken, replace the switch.

Had a Geo tracker that had that problem. Found that the wire going to the reverse light switch had grounded to the trans case because of heat. It melted to the case. If you need a switch pm me. I have a source that should have some. I bought one from him. Think it was 5 or 10 bucks if I remember. I've heard the aftermarket ones don't work well? It should be just a simple switch that opens and closes.
