L is a low ratio 'creeper' gear.

On most automatics - L would be Low - used if you need to hold the car in low gear for any reason, for example to prevent an upshift everytime you lift off the throttle when climbing a hill, or to use compression braking, descinding the hill.

Under most circumstances you should be able to just select D and let the transmission figure out what gear it needs to use.

Thanks both of you , you just verified what my son told me today, what he had heard. So just R and D for me.
So P for parking and N for traffic lights I can relax.

A little story for thanks: About 30 yrs ago I had a DAF automatic. A belt broke, my dad a retired colliery mechanic, used an old conveyor belt clip to fix it.

When I drove, the engine went eeeeeeeeeeeee boink eeeeeeeee boink
When the clip hit the pulley you got the BOINK
Thanks again Brian
