Well I went and looked at an 88 Samurai. It was a little to far gone to suit me. It would make a great mud truck for a young'un but I need something a little more.... stock.

One of the issues was the electrical system which was shreaded, oh it could be fixed or maybe get a new wiring harness but it got me to wondering if there was an aftermarket ignition for these and/or other four cylinders that you guys have had experience with.

This one ran verry ruff and I'm thinking it was in limp mode (if they had that in 88) because there were soooo many wires hanging I figuered some or most were from sensors.

So are there any aftermarket Ignition and/or carb setups that you guys have tried and had good results with?

Probably the easiest way is to get an aftermarket controller box. MSD street fire can trigger off of magnetic pickups or points ignitions so all you need to have in tact is the distributor itself and the goodies inside. Everything else is replaced by the box. You can then run what ever coil into the stock cap.

I looked at those. What is the point (pun intended) of using the controler with points? Aside from the rev limiter what would it do?

The point? If you want to use an electronic tach and the variable electronic ignition advance feature.

Although a good upgrade would be to replace the points with an electric pickup.... some people still don't. At lease with the box the points will last a lot longer.

Is this a carb model or EFI?

The one I looked at had a carb. But I was speaking in general terms thinking there may be a preferred carb ignition set other folks have tried.

Here is something that once you got it set up would probably work well but it looks like it is a big project to get it going

MegaJolt Lite Jr. - Autosport Labs

This would eliminate the need for the distributor and if you used parts from a junk yard it would be a lot cheaper than a MSD ignition and you would have full control of how your ignition acts

Boys howdy, I can see myself now bouncing down some old dirt road laptop in hand/on passenger seat in floor........ making minute timming adjustments trying to eek out just a little more MPG.and power.

It does look like a good way to go the no distrubuter thing is nice but I'll have to upgrade my machine shop tools before I tackle this one.
