Hey all, I'm new to the Samurai, i really dont know much about them. I have a motorcycle for sale and someone offered to trade me his 87 samurai for it, from what i can tell it has been well restored from top to bottom. He says its has -

Rinolined the interior, new 1.3 L crate engine, weber carbs, 3 inch shakel lift (under axel), 31" tsl tires. Fresh paint. Custom diamond plate interior with fresh gun metal paint. Bumpers, winch, roof rack, you name it and its been done to it.

i have absolutely no idea about these trucks but I'm debating on getting it. i was wondering if anyone can give me some advise on what to look at, and if there are any know issues with this Year (1987).

Hello,

Not an old timer but from extensive research and driving some, I'd say that'd be a good trade, considering the paint, rack, winch and bumpers, those would add up to cost eventually, unless you make your own like some like to.

It all depends on the value of your motorcycle though.

And you should take it out for a test drive.
Sammys ride rough, and it won't get any better any easy without either welding knowledge, or a few hundred $ in bolt on kits for spring conversions like YJ or Toyotas, and 1k+ for coilys. So first thing you got to do is check out if you can live with the ride. High tire pressure can also affect this though, too high will be horrible because the Sammy is so light.

Then watch out for any steering issues, another thing that requires some knowledge as well in my opinion. It might be bent perches or frame, you never know. Does it track straight? good.

Check for rust on the fenderwells/under the wheel arches, you cant see from the outside or the inside if they're covered with panels, but you can if you look through the gap between the fender and the tire. Nothing serious that some cutting, fabbing, and welding wont resolve, because in country it wouldn't pass inspection.

Not much more really, there's not much to these trucks, if the engine is newish then shouldn't be a problem, and most issues can be resolved by anyone with a manual, just make sure all gears are good and that the t box and the front locking hubs work properly, pay attention to any vibration noises, could be a bad shaft as well, no biggie though. Also ask him and take a note of what gears he's got in the t case and diffs, if they're not stock you might want to know what they are for later.

Brakes don't have much to them, I refreshed mine a couple weekends ago easily, even took the cylynders apart, cleaned and polished them with some sandpaper, it's braking better now, it was kind of stuck, anything bad can be sourced cheaply and put together easily.

That's pretty much it I think, do wait until the vets come chime in tho, they'll know a lot more.
