The mechanic says my turbo is seized and needs to be replaced.
He says he will have to determine which of the 3 different turbos
are needed, and that it will cost about $500.
Does anyone have any experience rebuilding one with a turbo kit
bought from ebay?
What info would I need to know in order to know which of the 3
different turbos I'd need?
Has anyone been down this road before?

Hi Tom.

Turbos are not nearly as mysterious as some people make them out to be. Some place on the body of the unit their will be a number. Could be cast into the body or a tag with rivets depending on the manufacturer.

In my experience I almost never replace the entire turbo. It's just not necessary. And a big cost savings. Just replace the (capsule) or (cartridge)..goes by many names. But it's the center part with the seals/bearings. That is the parts that always fail.

The rest of the turbo is just 2 shafts and 2 fans, 2 housings. Sometimes the fans do in fact need to be replaced. Once the center bearings start to fail, it can cause the fans to wobble and strike the blower housing, damaging them. In that case a entire turbo is in order. But this is rare. The same (capsule) may be used by many-many car makers with the fans and housings being the only real differences.

If it were me, just get a repair kit and be done with it. It's not that hard.

Yes, I think I'll put it up on ramps and crawl under and
have at it. Scrub up, were going in, a turboectamy.

Good man!!.

it's just nuts & bolts here. Not rocket science.

A turbo is nothing more than a vacuum cleaner.. a air pump.. that's all it is in the end. 2 bearings & 2 seals, that's it. A little common sense and you got this under control.

Just watch your oil lines in and out. Make 100% sure nothing is blocking that oil flow. Lack of oil is the #1 reason turbos fail in the first place. The drain back line is the one to really watch. Not all have a radiator cooling lines. If yours does, check them also for blockage.

Mark the fan housings before you remove them so you get them back in the right place.

Sir Bruce, do a defective Turbo-charger would or can cause the engine-oil loss??? My Zuki is still observed of sucking engine oil and estimated to be about 1 Liter in every 500 kilometer run in city... Some mechanics diagnosed it of a defective valve-seals, others say piston ring and somebody also said to be caused by a defective turbo... In your opinion sir bruce, what is it probably??? - Symptoms are spraying oil with water when you rev high in the morning... Thank you in advance...

Greetings! I had my turbo rebuilt here on Lapu Lapu, Cebu.
Better to be on a lift as the exzost manifold bolts can bee a bear. It is a strength demanding job with right tools. Turbo can cause both oil, and water leaks.
If U got kit, Ok machine shop to press bearings.

100% yes it can. From small to Large amounts of oil leak from the turbo seals. The 2 seals in the turbo are prone to failure because of the very high heat of the turbo. Most common is the pressure side seal.

It can be hard to tell about oil usage, as their can be more than one cause of the usage.
