Hello All,
I have a 92 Sammi w/5"lift from Calmini and a new transfer case from Petroworks which gives me the option of 2L without shifting into 4WD. I am getting a "grinding" or better yet a "chattering" noise in 4H only when I let off the accelerator and let her coast. I have changed all the u-joints as thought that was causing the problem. She makes no noise in 2H,2L, or 4L with or w/o the hubs locked in. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this as she is a great rig!! Thanks for any help,Montanaman

i have a similar problem in my stock t case, only when throttle is released in 4h, mine sounds like when driving over gravel, but the noise comes from the t-case. oil change made it heaps better, but noise is still there. if you havent changed it for a while, change it and drive around for a week or two then change it again. see if that helps...

it sounds like the output shaft or bearing from your tcase to the front drive axle. It probably doesn't hit high enough RPMS in 4L or 2L if it only does it in 4H. I don't know what the top speed is supposed to be, but I do know that I can't travel above 50mph in 4w mode without getting some really bad sounding rattles going on.

Does it make the noise with the wheels locked in and driving in 2H at high speeds? That would help narrow down where the rattles were coming from in the T-case.

Transfer case noise 92 Sammi

Thanks to WHINCUP,BARATACUS,and BILLJOHN for your responses!!! I am still trying to figure out how this posting works so bear with me. What is a quick reply icon? Anyway to answer some of the questions: It does not make the noise in 2H with the hubs locked in at any speed; I have changed the transfer case fluid to full synthetic 75w-90 to no avail. I was suspecting the hubs but they seem fine as far as jacking up the front end and turning the wheels in both free and locked modes. The front driveshaft seems tight enough in the splines but there is a little play i.e. 4 or 5 thousandths maybe. Since I jacked her up 5" or so I was thinking the front driveshaft was extended too far but it doesn't seem to be. Thanks again,Montanaman
