Hi,

I have a 91 Vitara with an Auto transmission...
I have an intermitent problem where it will not start (starter motor won't turn over at all) The only thing that fixes it is jiggling the gear selector in & out of park. It looks like a fault in whatever detects the gear is in park position...

Any ideas on where to look to possibly fix this issue ?

Maybe in whatever detects the gear is in park position?

You'll find it on the side of the transmission - follow the shift selector cable ...

The shift switch is located on the right side of the tranny - it is a switch that is closed (allowing ignition) when the shift lever is in either park or neutral. I believe that a black/red wire runs to the switch, and a black/yellow runs from the switch to the starter solenoid and ECU.

When you say the shift switch is located on the right side of the tranny. Do you mean under the car in the tanny itself. Or under the gear selector cover inside the actual car ?
