I just bought a 1990 sammy. I not real familiar with them. It seems like I have a vacuum problem or an O2 sensor bad. It will idle erratically up and down after it has warmed up. It drives fine, but at a stop starts with the erratic idle? Anyone have some ideas???

Get it scanned. Sounds like the cold start valve in the fuel injection or one of the sensors such as the IAT, but you need the trouble codes to focus on the exact problem so you do not end up throwing money all over the place trying to guess to success.

For future reference, there is no "scanning" to be done on a 90 samurai. Simply put a fuse in the diagnostic slot in the fuse block, turn the key on and decipher the check engine light flashes, to see what code(s) it is showing.

My poor choice of words.

Scanning is counting the flashes and here are the instructions:
To translate the codes on the EFI model. turn on the ignition switch and make sure that the "Check Engine" light comes on. While ignition switch is on, insert a spare fuse into the DIAG slot in the fuse panel. Observe the "Check Engine" light. It will flash out any stored trouble codes.

The trouble codes are communicated as a series of flashes on the "Check Engine" light. The codes are two digits, which are communicated as a group of .03 second flashes, with a .03 second pause between the flashes, and a 1 second pause between digits. The code will repeat itself three times, with a 3 second pause between repetitions, then it will continue to the next code (if any).

So...if one dot is equal to .1 second (for the purpose of putting this pattern into writing), and you saw FLASH...FLASH.........FLASH, it would read 21.

One addition to that....
If the CEL stays on steady, when you try to read codes, make sure the CEL isn't on because the odometer reached a mileage interval that automatically lit the CEL. If that is the reason the CEL is on, then the CEL reset switch under the dash needs to be flipped to the other position, in order for the CEL to flash codes.
One way around the whole CEL automatically being lit by the odometer reaching a mileage interval is to simply disconnect the CEL wires from the switch. Once that is done, the only way the CEL can be lit is by the ECM, when it sees a fault. The codes can still be read, by putting a spare fuse in the diagnostic slot in the fuse block.
