Greetings,

I desperately need help resolving a sporadic issue I've been having with my Samurai over the last 3 months. Nearly every time I drive it, the thing stalls after hitting medium sized bumps. I've noticed that driving into my slightly uphill drive way with a bump at the curb kills it about 80% of the time. After I hit the bump it continues to run for about 4 seconds then stalls as if I turned the ignition off. The dash lights come on immediately after stalling.

Then when I try to start it, it acts as if it were flooded and I can smell gas. After pumping the throtle I can usually get it started within 5 minutes of cranking on it and letting it sit.

The other day I noticed the battery tie down is missing! I promptly tied it down very tightly with bungie cords but the issue is still happening. I've jiggled every electrical connection and can't seem to replicate the issue while under the hood.

I took it to the guys at firestone and they said they couldn't replicate the issue. they didn't even notice my battery was missing the tie down...

Any suggestions, or ideas are very apreciated
Thanks,
BRUMSHINE

check to see if you have a busted motor mount. If the engine is moving around it could have broken contact with the main ground cable that goes from the battery neg pole to the engine block. Also check the ignition wire that goes from the battery pos terminal to a plastic connector right next to the battery tray. If that connection has a short or break then it will kill your engine as well.

Thanks for the reply Baratacus, I've checked the cables you recommended and both seem intact. Also I've unhooked the small wire comming off the positive terminal to check for shorts and the vehicle continued running without it attached.

I think i've verified all connections to the battery. There is a thick cable coming off the neg term, to the engine, a short thin cable comming off the neg term to the body, there is a thick cable comming off the pos terminal going to the starter?(bottom of engine) and thin cable mentioned before.

Also, all engine mounts are intact.

I'd be more than happy to test any other suggestions anyone may have.

Thanks again,

when it stalls and you go to restart it, does it start back up first go or does the starter have to turn for a few seconds?... if your having to make the starter turn for a few seconds before it starts, id say its the carburetor. hit a bump and it floods the engine

You're correct. It acts as if it were flooded after a bump.

I took the air filter off and the part that connects the air tube to the carb to try and see any type of blockage or clogs and I couldn't see anything. One thing I did notice is that the little tube from the top of theairbox to the bottom of the carb was very deteriorated and not making a good seal. the tip broke when i pulled it off and I can't plug it back in. Could this be the prob? It still runs with that tube unplugged, but idk.

Thanks,

you mean the narrow vacuum lines? yes it doesnt hurt to replace all of those, i did it in my zuk about 2 weeks ago. maybe just me imagining it, but it seems soooo much smoother since... especially if theyre cracked, etc, id be looking at replacing them. its cheap, quick and easy to do.

Ok, I'll give it a shot. is that the same type of tubing i could pick up at lowes? or do i need to order it from a place like o'rileys?

Another thing I think I'm going to check is the fuel filter by the rear passenger tire. maybe some gunk is in that and it's getting shaken up...

replacing those wont stop it from stalling, it will just run smoother... sorry i actually meant to add in that the best fix would be to have the carburetor rebuilt...

I too have been experiencing these same symptoms for a few weeks now?
Coasting to slow down and then speed bump caused stall? Hard to start like its flooded?

Have you checked the engine mounts and the earth straps from the starter motor and from the distributor?

I have an update…this was still happening to me so about a month ago I decided to replace the carb with a rebuilt original one. My mechanic believed the float was jumping causing the engine to flood out. It was not electrical or pre-carb fuel problems.

So far the new carb is running fine with no stalling…..keeping my fingers crossed.
