I have an 87 samurai that is in need of some more power. The last expedition I went on lead to a roll over because there was no power to get up a steep incline, cause me to have to pop the clutch and hope for the best and my luck ran short. I have always been a fan of diesels, so when I heard of a fairly easy diesel swap such as the vw 1.6, I am all for it. The Sami will most be trail and weekend driver for around town(low speed country roads) so the I am favoring torque over hp, even though the vw has more hp than my current 1.3 in the Sami. I am starting this new project with some knowledge of what to do. I know I want a vw 1.6 turbo diesel, and using an acme adapter kit because I have heard nothing but good things about it. I am currently looking for the motor, I know a few websites such as qualitygermanautoparts.com that sell the motor I need, but I was wondering if anyone had one for sale maybe wanting to do a swap or knows of a place that sells them for reasonable price. I know it's not going to be cheap and that is not what I want, but I'm always cool with finding a good deal. If anyone knows of a vw diesel for my swap, I am interested in an offer. Located in southeast Texas, willing to pay shipping if reasonable offer.

I looked at two options when I did my conversion. First was a donor vehicle, however all the potential donors I found had motor problems or high miles. Second was quality German auto parts as you have already noted, I went with the second.

He was very knowledgeable on the subject of the conversion. If you can afford to buy a good low millage motor I highly recommend him.

How does it perform? are you satisfied with the conversion. and what was the cost?

I went ahead and got a 1.6 turbo diesel from quality German. In the description of the motor it said it needed the turbo rebuilt, I was ok with that and figured the turbo would be all new on the inside. I ordered a rebuild kit, but upon tear down of the turbo and compressor, I found the worst case senerio, the whole inside of the compressor was cracked and had chunks missing from heat generated from the worn out bearings. I ended up ordering a new turbo from turbonetics, I could not find the turbo I wanted from Garrett, the original manufacture of the stock turbo. I tore down much of the outside; manifolds, down pipe, valve cover and some brackets so I could sand blast and paint, just to make it look nicer when I put the motor in. I ordered an acme kit to for installation, seemed like the most obvious choice. I am replacing as many seals as I can without breaking into the motor. New water pump and harmonic balancer are next on my list to buy. Water pump is easy to find, but I cannot find a harmonic balancer anywhere!!!! I may be over looking or searching for the wrong thing, it's the pulley at the front of the motor at the very bottom. Right now I am waiting for the turbo to arrive, and will pick up a water pump this weekend when I come back from college. I'm excited for this swap, as a big diesel fan, this is one of the coolest and most interesting projects I have ever done. It's only a matter of time!

It cost me about $3000 to do the swap. Although it can be done for less I tend to spend a little extra money on projects to get all the parts exactly the way I want them and didn't spend allot of time trying to search junk yards.

Brodyb, the front pulley that I have on mine has two v-belts on it with a thin rubber seal between the outer weight and the inner bolting surface. The rubber was a little rough so I wanted to replace it, however I could not find one. Even went t0 the local VW dealership. I cleaned mine up and added JB weld to the gap where the rubber seal was to make it a solid harmonic balancer and have had no problems. If yours cannot be cleaned up you should start checking junk yards.

She does very well at speeds up to 70mph. If I take the long way to work the route has a speed limit of 65mph with strong Metro presence and traffic, so until I get a chance to take an out of town trip on a stretch of road with higher speeds I cant really say how she will do. But I expect she will perform like a champ up to 80mph.

What kind of rpms are you running at that speed?

With 430 differentials instead of the originals and slightly larger tires the RPM's are right around 3k at 70mph.

The older 1.6l Turbo diesel is most efficient from 2,500 to 3,000 RPM's. The Torque curve then levels off and finally starts to drop off at 3,500.

In my driving experience so far, this engine performs best from 2000 to 3000 but I have had good luck with running her up to 3500 before shifting when accelerating.
