Help!

I have an 87 carburated samurai, and she has recently begun idling very low after getting warmed up. She starts up fine, idles around 1500 for a few minutes, but then progressively drops rpms before dying completely (takes more than 15-20 minutes to die out). When she is running, it smells like she's burning very rich, and my fuel economy seems to be worse. Lots of exhaust and a bit of smoke in the engine bay.

I can tell the problem is getting worse, and i have no doubt she'll fail to run at all soon enough.

I've removed the air filter and doused the carb with choke cleaner, the choke was a little gunky and now moves more freely, but did nothing to correct the problem.

I've seen similar but not exact issues where cleaning/replacing the IAC was recommended, but have yet to mess with it.

Note: Right before this idle problem began, I dealt with the "clicky starter" issue, where the starter relay was failing to provide enough power to fire the starter solenoid. Instead of buying a replacement relay, I got a bit redneck and wired in a push-button switch directly from the battery to the starter terminals, and mounted the switch in my dash (effectively bypassing the defective starter relay).
She worked great for a day or two after that fix, and then this idle problem began. The proximity of the two issues smells fishy to me, and my friend insists the idle problem is related to my starter fix. Could I have somehow deprived a throttle/idle component of power?

Note2: I spilled a little lock-tite into the carb whilst attempting to secure my stripped up air filter bolt into its slot. I did my best to get all of it wiped out but obviously some residual gunk coulda stuck around. could be attacking my engine?

i recently was having the same issue with my sami. I was able to locate it to a few vacuum tubes that had not been secured down. another thing i would check is if yours is mechanical or electric fuel pump. mine had a mechanical put in from the previous owner that was pulling some fuel in when idle was high, then once the engine cooled down it idled like crap and would die from lack of fuel. d

check HIC valve

My samurai did the same thing right after I replaced the air filter. It was just a small vacuum line that connects to the HIC valve which is in the bottom of the air intake right where it connects to the carburetor. Its pretty hard to see and I did not notice it come disconnected when I changed the air cleaner. If you have trouble finding it here is a link with a diagram of where it is.
