what kind of noie is it anyways?? Last tranny i had that made noise in gears and sometimes it didn't the input gear was worn and after driving it for a while like that it ended up compleatly stripping the gear out. Tranny is easy to take out and put back so it wouldn't hurt to take it out and look and see what you can see. you will know if something isn't rite.

I seem to remember there being a bearing that would go bad in them... cheap fix if you are a wrench turner... just time consuming.

Good advice so far, but your question about swapping the tranny because of low power... it's probably not the tranny. Check your motor for compression. Then realize that at its peak performancelevel it still only has less than 60HP.

The technology is out there, rebuild and upgrade...

got worse

Now its worse.
It starts, but it doesnt seem to be going into gear. If feels like shifting, but it just stays in neutral. We are going to tow it home tonight. At first we thought the clutch might be out, but it started up ok. I put it in what I thought was 2nd, let the clutch out and nothing happened. Is the tranny shot, or is there something inbetween the stick shift and tranny that could have gone out?

theres 3 rods that the shifter pushes back and forth to put it in gears, take the four bolts holding the boot on the shifter off, then the shifter knob, then theres 3 bolts holding the shifter in place, take those out and pull the shifter out and make sure that it isnt broken, most trannys dont just completely die out like that, just certain gears will, that sounds to me like the shifter was bent and not putting it in gear all the way and finally broke off in nuetral, if not it has to come out anyways to pull the tranny, its just a quick possibility

more trouble

Well, we got the suzuki home today.
It started, it only would go into 4th gear, so we pushed it with a van to get it fast enough to go into 4th. I made it home, well to the alley to pull in the drive way, but someone had plowed the snow into the yard, so I hit a snow pile and stopped. And it wont shift out of 4th now. So it all sucks right now.
It might be the clutch and the tranny out. Who knows?!

Sorry to hear. You can find a nice used 5-spd tranny for around $200 if you look around, and add another $130 for a new japanesse clutch kit.
