oil leaked out of input shaft and noisy throwout bearing so I have Friend/Mechanic that says no point in dropping tranny because bearing on input shaft is probably out of round in its seat. probably requiring new tranny housing. Anybody have any experience with this problem?

Get a real mechanic.

From what you've told us, the oil has probably leaked out past a damaged seal and there is no evidence of the "bearing on input shaft" being "out of round in it's seat". In fact I would say the probability of such a thing happening is slim to non-existent.

Just so that you're aware of it - the throwout bearing does not sit in a seat in the tranny housing - it's not even IN the tranny - so there are a couple of things fundamentally wrong either with your friend's diagnosis, or, your recounting of it.

You may have an oil leak from the transmission, and you may have a noisy throwout bearing, but the two are not related to one another - now if you had said a noisy input shaft bearing, I might have been more inclined to think it were possible, but not the throwout bearing.

Get a second opinion from someone who knows what they are doing.

More likely my explanation! I gave it to him because of loud squeeling when releasing the clutch. when depressed little to no noise. However the oil leaked out around the input shaft so he suspects the input shaft bearing may have frozen up and the outer race began to spin wearing the seat. I have viewed a diagram of the tranny and was wondering if the shaft bearing sits in a replacable housing. I've replaced several clutches (other vehicles) so have a working knowledge of the system.

How did you come to that conclusion? Worn/slipping clutches don't usually squeal - that squeal is more likely to becoming from a bearing, just not the throw out bearing - because defective throw out bearings usually make noise when the clutch is depressed and his doesn't - and even less likely to be a bearing in the transmission, since those are usually quite large & well lubricated - they do wear, and will make noise when worn, but it's usually more of a growl, whine or howl than a squeal.

Sunbeam - am I to understand that your friend/mechanic made that diagnosis based on your description of the problem? Without actually hearing the noise or driving the car? If that's the case, I take back what I said, diagnosing a noise from someone else's description is not an easy job - take the car to him and let him hear it for himself.

One question - do you get the noise with the engine running and the clutch released?

Could also be a worn front input shaft due to a bad pilot bearing. And you still might have a leaking front seal. The worn input shaft is a common problem on Samurais. Only way to be sure is to pull the transmission and take a look. This link contains an image of a worn shaft.

If you pull the transmission, check the crossmember to see if it has the requisite notch to make removal easier. It needs to be about 1/2" wide and 3/8" deep.

That's the exact bearing that I'm suspect is the problem - there is another approach to repairing it other than replacing the input shaft, but it does require a complete disassembly of the transmission.

Chuck the input shaft into a lathe and turn the nose down just enough to clean the worn portion so that it runs true, now make a sleeve and press fit it over the nose and then turn the outside of the sleeve down to the original diameter of the shaft.

I've had clutches squeal when they get to the rivets. Though I'll grant the clutch release bearing (throw out bearing) is much more likely.

It not clear to me from the description if releasing the clutch is when the cars in gear trying to pull away or just done in neutral stationery....

I'm afraid to have the guy pull the tranny yet until I locate parts. Don't want to tow it back and forth.

Do you know of a parts house that I might get a shaft, bearing, seal etc?
I'm going to be in Cookeville, TN Aug 19-25 visiting my Brother-in-law so even a local place to you might work.

Sunbeam - just sent you a private message.

Assuming that the nose of the transmission front input shaft is worn, that you want to keep the truck for a while, and none of the other repairs have been done, you are probably looking at the following:

1. Replace or re-sleeve the input shaft (new - $130)
2. Replace clutch, TO bearing, and pilot bearing. Also reface the flywheel ($200)
3. Replace rear main oil seal ($13)
4. Replace front & rear oil seals on the transmission since you have it out and the case separated to replace the input shaft. ($20)
5. Check clutch cable. On mine, the adjuster was frozen and had to be replaced. ($35)

Have no idea what the shop labor would be if you can't do it yourself, but $500-$800 or so might be reasonable depending on where the work is done.
