Mechanical fuel pump on 86 samurai was only putting out 2psi causing truck to stall. Upon removal of the pump I discovered fuel pump rod has no resistance. my other samurai the fuel pump push rod in the cylnder head would want to slowly push itself out of the head when i installed it. This push rod stays whereever i put it. If the cam is worn would that cause this? Im hesitant to put my new mechanical fuel pump. Only thing i can think is to hand crank engine at crank to see if it pushes the rod out? Any ideas would be awesome, thanks.

IMHO, 2psi shouldn't be the cause of stalling. Weber carbs will work down to less than that. The factory carb should work, too. Have you checked the fuel filter back by the tank for being plugged? I'd be looking for another problem causing the stalling, besides the low fuel pressure. You didn't say under what conditions the stalling was taking place. Idle? Cruise? Heavy acceleration? All the time?
I really don't see anything wrong in your photo. What was your concern? If, your old fuel pump was working at all, then the pushrod was moving as it should. A worn fuel pushrod cam lobe is unlikely, as all your other cam lobes would most likely be toast, too.

The photo shows a fat hole going from the inside of the fuel pump mount( top right corner) into the head, where i imagine oil pouring through into the fuel pump. I could be wrong about that hole being the issue but it looks pretty bad. The fsm or acks (forget which one) says only a tiny but of oil should ever get through the push rod to the fuel pump, any more gunna have problems. Stalling was during any kind of driving or idling. Lots of smoke too. I think oil was going through the hole in the head, in to the pump and being burned. i have read that it will run fine with 2psi but that was the best i was getting. , i have an adjustable pressure regulator, but it wasnt adjusting, and factory should pump 4psi. pump putting out 2psi max sometimes lower even less than 1. I have all new fuel lines except the metal ones, new fuel filter kit with all those hoses, I drained and flushed the gas tank, new weber that was running great on my other samurai, along with adjustable fuel pressure regulator, fuel pressure gauge, air filter, pcv valve, spark plugs, wires, cap, rotor, adjusted the valves, timing belt, did the crank and cam timing, theres no visual leaks of any kind, or any others im aware of. Ive also tried 2 mechanical fuel pumps. Installed oil pressure gauge and pressure seems fine. Compression test came out 165 across the board. Nothing i did helped. Everything was done exactly according to the FSM except the weber of course.
