Get the brakes checked, either badly worn, leaking slave cylinder, or bad master cylinder. If you don't have the mechanical skills or knowledge then don't run the risk, get a qualified person to investigate for you.

Nope - a faulty brake booster (or check valve) will reduce the "assistance" provided by the power brake system - the brakes will still work, they will just require more pedal pressure to stop the car.Thanks for that, will chase this up.
