Hello everyone, I recently bought a 2008 Suzuki SX4 sedan it currently has 88,000 miles. The car turns on but does not stay running and when I gas the car that is the only time it stays on and as soon as I let go of the gas pedal the car turns off. The lady I bought it from crashed the car in a snow bank and the left passenger fender was dented and the radiator was busted up and I replaced that, put a new air filter, replaced the ECU. I took out the spark plugs and they were completely fried (due to the last owners carelessness) changed the oil and put a new filter. I also scanned the car and the code P227 barometric pressure popped up but I changed the ECU for that.

Any ideas what could be causing the problem? I would greatly appreciate all the feedback because I’m stumped... thank you!

Poor diagnostics! :confused: What ever possessed you to change the ECU? :eek:

CAn you fill up your profile with info already provided and add where you live, engine type: there are several variations across the world and it helps receiving relevant replies..
I'd pay attention to the MAF.....

Barometric pressure sensor is located inside the ECU at least that’s what I was told by Sx4 owners I still have the ECU that came with the car never got rid of it just replaced it with a newer one same year, same car, same specs. As I stated before I scanned the car and the barometric pressure was signifying a problem.

I live in the United States/ Pennsylvania. I have a 2008 Suzuki SX4 sedan 2.0 engine. I’ll defiantly check that out is there any way of troubleshooting the MAF without the car running to see if it’s bad?

It happens the MAF gets dirty . (damaged air filter can be a cause). THe dirt kind of isolates the maf components from the flow of air so it ignores the amount of passing air and consequently does not provide fuel. Just have access to the MAF and clean it with a small artist brush with alcool. The actual sensor is usually one or a pair of thin bare wire so be careful.

ALso..be careful interpreting fault codes as the culprit. Often the code is the consequence of another problem instead of the cause. Do you still have the P227 ?

or...spray the heck out of it with a can of MAF cleaner, DO NOT use carb cleaner or brake cleaner, those will damage it. I tend to avoid the brush method, too easy to kill the sensor wire.

unplug it, the car will run, but not particularly well. this is a "get you home" setting in the ECU that has default maps in case the sensor dies.

I haven’t scanned it yet to check but I cleaned the MAF and the car was running for a bit and then the car started smoking white smoke from the exhaust and by the manifold and then lost power

..how long is a bit?
..is white smoke from oil (smelly) or coolant?..is this the first time ?

Probably a result of the MAF cleaning attempt, either the hot wire was still wet or has been damaged...

Unplug the MAF and report the result..
