Hi All,

As the subject says, my 2007 Reno started showing a P0128 code. I did a forum search, but most threads seemed to be a few years old.

I thought the coolant was low about 2 weeks ago. I added the proper fluid, the proper amount. Normal maint. stuff.

Then as you all know, we (i'm in chicago specifically) had that freezing "polar vortex". The car ran like a champ. The heat has been pretty good too. Keeping up as well as expected.

Anyway.. the engine light came on, checked the code.

Is the best option to go right with the themostat? Or the ECT? Should I wait and see with any of this?

Thank you all in advance for you knowledge and help.

hm its an interesting question. from what i can tell the code indicates that the motor didnt reach proper operating temp in a given amount of time. did the code come on when the outside temp was super cold during the "polar vortex"? if thats the case it might have just been so cold it took the car an unusual amount of time to warm up. i know in some of the colder areas people use block warmers when the car is parked overnight so the cars will start and warm up faster than they normally would under colder than normal conditions. you might want to clear the code and see if it comes back. if it does maybe start with changing the thermostat. the code could also indicate that the thermostat is working correctly. let us know what happens

Thank you for the quick response. Ill try clearing it and see if it returns.

Notes: this light came on after we were back in the 30s. How can the light come on and stay on "engine not up to temp" if it just started? Must be a previous stored code.

I have been using the "Hold" button often for all the slick snow and ice. Worked like a champ.
That is unrelated to the code popping up. Just saying. ..

Today, mid 30s outside. Jumped in the car, within a couple minutes nice warm heat.

I rarely idle the car and let it warm up.

Thank you for your help. Update to follow.

Strange. We are back to 0 degrees F and the check engine light didnt come on. Maybe its a red herring.
