Good evening folks,

I have a 2005 forenza, of which I have had tons of problems. However, the most recent problem is a loud high-pitched, squealing sound coming from the engine. THe sound occurs at idle and when accelerating. I took a look under the hood today and noticed a thin rope like belt located under the air filter casing that appeared to be worn. However, I am unsure as to what belt this is. Perhaps the alternator belt? If so, can a bad alternator belt cause this kind of loud high-pitched sound? Or is it more likely the serpentine belt?

Thanks for any help, advice you fine folks can offer.

That belt underneath the air filter is the Serpentine belt. If its worn don't let it break. Must get that replaced. The squealing I have no idea what can make it.

i would go ahead and replace the worn belt. it should be easy enough to do yourself...if not, the guys at autozone(or the like) will help you out.

this is most likely the cause of the squealing. most squealing you will ever hear from a car is a belt. the belt you described is attached to your alternator, your power steering, and your A/C. without this belt, your car will still run, but your battery will die very quickly and it will be hard to turn...so you're better off replacing it before it breaks.

Thanks guys - I will definately look into getting it fixed tomorrow. I am not mechanically inclined, at all, so it may be better for me to take it to the dealership. Although, I would LOVE to save the money and do it myself.

The other problems, as the guy before you asked: Headlamps (pre-recall and post-recall), cat converter, the key locking in the ignition x2, keyless entry not working, trunk switch broke, gas cap x2, O2 sensor, rear head lamps filling with water, right front headlamp filled with water, crack in the windshield fluid container, and some others but can't remember them atm...

the key locking in the ignition x2=I believe there is a recall on 05's for that and a couple of write-ups elsewhere in the forum.

keyless entry not working=#1-bad battery, #2-blown fuse, #3-loose wire

trunk switch broke= $40 for the key cylinder, anything else slightly cheaper.

cat converter, O2 sensor, gas cap x2= if you are getting a CEL then I would start by replacing the gas cap, if you've already done that then I would do the O2 sensor next. Nothing should be wrong with the cat unless you've got 150k or more on your car, if your O2 sensor is bad that could be fooling your computer into giving you a false bad cat code.

rear head lamps filling with water, right front headlamp filled with water, Headlamps (pre-recall and post-recall),=worn or improperly set gasket probably shorting out the headlight circuit and causing your other headlight problems.

crack in the windshield fluid container=any epoxy glue will seal that crack

Yeah, most of that stuff wasn't too expensive to get fixed, the more annoying part is just the number of things (outside of normal maintenance) going wrong. Also, I did a lot of searching for recalls for the 05 forenza and the only thing I found was the headlight assembly/wiring. Though I may have missed something.

I also thought the cat converter going bad was slightly premature, but they said (stealership) that it was (this was in 07) but luckily it was under warranty at the time.

After the stealership replaced the cat and the O2 and the CEL kept coming on, they replaced the gas cap. Which did not fix the CEL so they replaced the gas cap again. That seemed to do the trick.

The water in the headlights, taillight was pretty annoying for a long time. They replaced those.

I still enjoy the car for the most part, I do think however, they some of the materials used in the manufacturing were pretty shoddy.

Update on current issue: The stealership naturally wanted to charge me 225 bucks to replace the serpentine belt AND they wanted me to put on a new power steering pump (they said that was the main cause of the "whine" I was hearing from the engine). However, I decided to take it to a garage that came highly recommended. They replaced the serpentine belt for 70 bucks and the guy flushed my power steering fluid and replaced it with new fluid for 50 bucks. Current problems seeming solved. :p

the squealling noise is your belt and it could be caused by a bad tensioner and being worn. have a mechanic check out the alignment of all you pullys as well. what ever you do don't put any sort of "belt dressing" or any thing like it on your belt. it will stop the squeel for a little bit, but it will leave a sticky mess every where and you will piss off the poor mechanic that fixes your car
