If I had the transfer case in neutral and the parking brake on, how much should I be able to rotate the driveshaft? It seems as I shift from drive to reverse or back, there's too much of a "clunk"... tia ~

newer model I know being a 3G but I can get a definite "clunk" out of mine and its got 50,000 kms or so on it,. the 3 doors at 80,000 kms and is about the same.

check UJ's for slop would be a good place to start. Another clunk source is the suspension and diff mountings moving.

Just an FYI, we have two 2004's: on the one in question, the driveshaft rotates ~45 degrees from drive to reverse. On the other, it's 10-12 degrees.

45 degrees sounds like a little much to me.
