1996 Geo Tracker- 4wd auto Key Switch issue????

UPDATE- when I insert the key , have problem unlocking the steering wheel??

Should I just get a used Steering column??

PS: I leave the key in it so I don't have the issue !!

Over the last couple days, when start my tracker to plow my drive way.

1. Turn the key switch-starter no engaged
2. Lights work
3. Fan works
4. I turn the key 10 to 20 times then it works.
5. Any known issues with the key switch??? should I just replace it??

It sounds like you have TWO issues.

1. Lock engagement problems (key worn, wheel lock linkage bound or lock needs lube)

Have you tried the spare key or lubricated the lock? (there are graphite laced oils made specifically for the job)

2. Once the key/switch DOES move properly, you have apparent intermittent starting problems.

Could be the key switch electrical contacts, starter / solenoid, trans neutral or clutch safety switch or poor wiring connections.

I'd begin with the ignition key / switch issue.
That may be the extent of the problem. ;)

After that (if need be)...you can jumper 12V + directly off the battery to the 1/4" spade solenoid (white shown / pulled off) connection to help ascertain if you have wiring or starter issues. Make sure that you are in NEUTRAL!

I have been leaving the Key in, no issues yet. I have White grease spray, or would I be better with WD40??

Thanks RW

PS, how hard would it be to convert to push button start and remove the wheel lock???!! off road only
