hey guys I know you have heard this before but I picked up a engine for my 89 sam when the orginal 1.3 quit. I did not know but I have a 1.6 out of a sidekick now. I have seen that I need a kit to make it fit but what else? Will the flywheel, clutch from my 1.3 work? Just looking for all the parts I "now" need to start loking for. I have a weber I was going to put on to the 1.3 so I think it will fit this engine as well. I see I will have to use the 1.3 distributor but any help would be great. By the way I am new so be kind!

Yup, 1.3 flywheel and clutch. Using the 1.3 disty helps reduce wiring problems. Make sure you use the 1.6 starter, as the 1.3 doesn't fit without a bit of grinding... besides, you will like the 1.6 starter better.

Have you got the 1.6 alternator and other ancillaries? I fitted the 1.6 8V into my SJ413 using all the original 1.3 ancillaries. I had to redrill the bottom pulley to the 5 bolt fixing and enlongate a few mounting holes. I also opened up the 1.3 inlet manifold to match the 1.6 head, the 1.3 exhaust manifold was already a good match to the 1.6 head. You will need a low pressure electric fuel pump.

Thanks, I have all the front end of the 1.6. This is how I figured out I had a 1.6. I assumed what I had was a direct replacement but as I got into fitting everything I dug a little deeper. I am guessing the exhast manofold will work with the carb I had bought for the other engine, it appears to be mostly the same. I have seem a couple of threads about the height, will I need a body lift for it to fit rght?

Not necessarily. You can get by with just using a pair of taller body bushings up at the front two body mounts. You can get to them through the grill. I am of the school that believes that a body lift is the last thing you want to do. There are legit reasons to use them, but it isn't as often as some folks think.

+1. I HATE BODY LIFTS. unless you are already getting pretty high up there and just need an extra inch of clearance for tires or something... ok. but when people slap a pair of "lift shackles" on with a 3" body lift... makes me want to punch them :p

I just did this swap on a low budget. I already had a body lift so height wasn't an issue. The only mods I made were the passenger side motor mount bracket needs to have a hole drilled 1" back and you need to weld 2 tabs onto the tranny to have it bolt up.







The only other thing was the electric fuel pump and a serpentine pulley for the waterpump (mine did not have the pulley attached). My 1.6 came complete with most of the neccesaries (dist, carb, plugs, wires, etc) as well as the starter.

I added a custom cam from KORE4x4.com added (actually this is where I got the whole package: Engine and Tranny) and a header. Now I can pull my skidoo on winter roads to the bush everyday for work.

Good luck...this is the best swap I've done!

This is great information. I am low budget but will most likely have to by the adapter plate. Who sells the best system? I just want to get my sam moving again! I was really beginng to like it when the 1.3 took a dump. All the other upgrades will follow. Do you run a weber carb? I bought one for the 1.3 before it took the dump and will put it on this 1.6. It all appears to mostly be the same.

The best adapter kit for the 1.6 conversion is probably the Petroworks Full Circle kit, but not if you are on a low budget. Remember that 'best' and 'low budget' are almost never used to describe the same component...
That kit not only adapts the engine mounting points, but it also lowers the motor so you don't need any body spacers for the front or any air cleaner mods to keep it out of the hood braces.

Yes "Best" and "Low Budget" very seldom fall in the same sentance. But sometimes even a low budget guy must admit he is better off to bit the bullet and do it right. In the long term it generally is best. It just does not happen as soon as I want. Must make it through Christmas first then sammy! Damn it's hunting season too......may take longer than first expected.
