I recently aquired two samuria's and one of them has had a 1.6 conversion and was running on propane before i bought it. When i picked it up they had tried to put the stock 1.3 carb on the 1.6 motor instead of the fuel injection which i do have but the wiring harness has been cut. I was wondering if anyone has tried to run the stock carb on a 1.6 conversion?

The stock carb works great on the 8 valve 1.6L engine, but you need the wiring harness and computer for it to work. If you have a complete stock intake somewhere that can donate all the parts necessary then go for it. If the harness has been cut and you don't have a donor vehicle to pull parts from, it may be easier to run an aftermarket carb on it than screwing around with the electrics and vacuum equipment. I'm sure all of the vacuum ports and vacuum switching valves have also probably been removed along with the stock air cleaner and vacuum valves for that.

Yours is a special situation, because they already hacked into the harness (you said it was cut).

But normally, yes, you can actually unbolt and peel back the intake and exhaust from a 1.3 and then replace the motor with a 1.6 (using the mount and trans adapters) and then bolt the 1.3 intake and exhaust onto the 1.6 head. It will run, but there are a couple of things you have to look out for.

- you may have to 'clearance' the heat shield underneath so the exhaust doesn't rattle - use a hammer...
- you will need to run a low pressure electric fuel pump, because the 1.6 doesn't use a mechanical like the carbed 1.3
- check the air cleaner horn for clearance with the hood before slamming it the first time... adjustments may have to happen.

I did this in a campground with limited tool access the first time about 10 years ago, so this is from experiance.

Thanks for the input. Just to clarify, i have the stock harness, 1.3 wiring harness on the vehicle and it is in perfect shape. The harness that is cut is the 1.6 fuel injected harness. I believe the intake and carb to be from the 1.3 stock motor. I have an inline Mr. Gasket cheap fuel pump on the vehicle on a toggle switch. If i turn on the pump and let it run for a few seconds then turn the pump off, the vehicle will crank and run for say 10 seconds when it runs out of fuel. But if i turn on the pump it kills the motor. I have tried using a cheap fuel regulator thinking it was getting to much fuel, but still no good results. I am now questioning since people are telling me it should work, whether the vacuum lines are hooked up properly. Let me know if this gives you any insight on finding the solution. Thanks Bam.

There is your key...
The 'cheap' fuel regulators (like Spectre) are no good at low pressures (below 5psi) and will lock up. You need to get a low pressure pump and/or a good regulator (like a Holley unit) to get the pressure back to where the carb is more comfortable.

I figured I would take my weber carb off my good samurai and try it on the problem child. Two hours later I put it on and it revs way up as soon as it gets fuel. I will try messing with the vacuum lines tomorrow. BAM!

which side of the regulator do you have the return line hooked up to the tank? Between the regulator and the fuel pump? or between the carburetor and the regulator?
