My daughter is using this car while away at college. I had instructed her to check the coolant at least weekly and add as needed. I don't think she did. She was driving home and she called and said that the temp gauge is all the way up. I told her to turn the heater and fan on full blast and get off the highway to a gas station. She said the heater was blowing cold not hot. She had the car towed to her house. I tried to fill the coolant and as I put it in the reservoir it'd fill and then gurgle down filling the engine. I looked underneath and no leaks. I filled it some more. It did the same thing. I looked underneath again and there were a few drops. I added more and looked again. More coming out. I started the car and even more came out. I'm hoping that it's either freeze plugs or heater hose. As I said, standing it front of the car facing it, the leak is behind the left side of the engine. I haven't been able to get it on a lift yet. Any guesses as to where the leak is, how difficult and how exepensive it might be to fix?

hi, welcome to the forum! the reno/forenza have whats known as a closed coolant system. what this means is you should never have to add coolant for the life of the car of course thats in a perfect world lolol. but if your adding coolant to the car it could indicate some a problem with the system or with the motor itself. you should also never really drive a car thats over heating you can run the risk of warping the head or worse. that being said, there are a few hoses on the back side of the motor that hold coolant. the water pump is also on the passenger side of the motor. i think the only way youll know whats wrong is to physically get in there and take a look. hoses run cheap and a water pump can run anywhere from $30-$100 depending on what you buy. you can get a whole timing kit including the pump for around $120 i think. the timing belt has to be changed every 60,000mi. if its a problem with the pump you might as well do the timing belt while your in there. let us know what you find

Coolant hose

There is a heater hose on the back side of the head that goes from the head to the heater core and the egr plate.
The hose usually breaks @ the head area.
You can see the hose by looking from the top of the engine between the intake and the head area. You can replace the hose with out removing the intake. Good luck hope this helps.

hi welcome to the forum! not sure if this is what your looking for but the freeze plugs are along the side of the engine block. theyre usually a brass or silver color, round and a little indented into the block. you really wouldnt mess with them unless your doing an engine rebuild. like i said im not sure if thats the info your looking for. it might help if you can give a little more information about what your doing to the car. just in case thats not what you need heres a link to the online service manual
