Default How bad is almost $600 for valve cover gasket and plugs?

Hell, I am a first timer trying to help a friend not get ripped off on repairs. He just bought a 2004 Verona with 70,000 miles, and based on an oil leak, the "Christian" repair shop quoted a new valve cover gasket at $59, labor $253, and new plugs for $182 and labor $81. They claim they are having the parts overnighted from California because they are unique. So how bad is this ripoff? We plan to retrieve the car this morning. Thanks for any help.

Well the price for the spark plugs seem too much but the labor for the valve cover gasket change seems reasonable. I did it myself once and it took a while, there's a lot of things you have to remove to change the gasket. They have to remove the whole intake manifold (the huge black thing on top of the engine) to get to the valve cover. Trust me it is A LOT. I don't think you got TOO ripped off, maybe just a little. That's why I rather change parts myself because mechanics charge a lot in labor for this car.

Are you sure they're spark plugs and not ignition coils? Because the coils cost $40-$50 each (there are six on this car). I don't know why they'd overnight spark plugs when any local AutoZone or AdvanceAuto have them at $7 each.
