Default 2 questions about my Verona

I have an 04 verona that I bought new, I've had some issues but overall I love the car. Still runs great (minus the issues below) and still has one of the smoothest rides around.

I do have 2 questions about it.

Is it possible for the Speed Sensitive Power Steering to go bad without any warning lights? On the highway, there are times when going around bends that it feels the steering is too light and I might lose control. I did this once a couple years ago and almost lost control on an entrance ramp, but have since been aware of the issue so no more problems, but I am just wondering if it's working in full assist mode all the time even though the sensor lights aren't coming on in the dash?

Secondly, I've had this issue for a while where the car jerks pretty bad when going at slow speeds and then push the gas pedal down. I think what is happening is that the car has a slow downshift from 2nd to 1st and if I push down the gas pedal while it's shifting, it jerks the car. It happens a lot at the parking garage at work and when pulling into my driveway. I've had it in to the shop before, but of course they can never replicate it.

Any thoughts/ideas?

That jerk was the transmission range switch on my car and the need for the transmission fluid to be changed. the verona is not a good high speed cornering car..at least mine is not - for exactly the type of issue you describe. Inconsistent cornering feel. Sometimes its too free and lose.
