It sounds like a loose wire, bad ground or bad bulb, even the indicator socket.
It could be anywhere in the circuit including the backup bulb at the rear of the car.
Another bad connection could be the switch on the shifter.
A lot of places to look at, I'd start at the bulb at the rear and check connections sometimes behind the left tail light housing.
