Default SX4s good cars, or not?

There are many things I like about a little '13 SX4 hatch with six-speed for sale by me. I have an 07 Toyota Corolla with 200k miles currently. It would basically be a commuter car and errand runner. I like the AWD since where I live it can get treacherous to get home at night when we have snow/ice.

NO BS assessment requested: are these things reliable and serviceable? It seems that the parts can be had from remaining dealerships and RockAuto. I am ok with that, and have done basic repairs on my cars. What I have found about different cars is that the ease of service can vary greatly. It seems that the SX4 with a small engine compartment and AWD can be somewhat of a pain to service things like the alternator.

What kind of real world MPGs do you get with these? I get about 32-33 MPG with my Corolla. I expect that the SX4 would be a bit less than that.

Thanks!

OK...no great details from you, but guessing you are in the USA and using miles/USgallon, the SX4 does a bit less, but not dramatic, specially since you talk of a 6speed manual. You pinpointed key problem..as seen from threads in this and other forums, about alternator. No problem in my case, but low mileage..we do not know about yours. Main rear driving shaft CV joints problem is recurent on this and other forums..but should not apply for a low mileage 2013 model.
Be kind enough to fill up your profile or signature with all details so we do not ask each time. Go to USER CP

I don't own the car. I am planning on test driving one with 75k miles. I wouldn't even consider a CVT. Do they have problems with lubrication, cam phasers, etc.? Those are the bits I am worried about since they are vehicle/engine specific and hard to find. 2013s will also have a traction/stability control system. Not sure how well Suzukis work compared to Subarus, etc.

I've called the single former dealer of Suzuki autos in my area and they will only do warranty claims...they do not distribute parts or do non-warranty related maintenance. I find this odd since I thought the law required OEM parts to be made available for at least 10 years following the last model year. We aren't to 2023 yet. Suzuki's website has several "parts dealers" which do not in fact sell parts.

It depends on the trim. In Canada, base and mid trim do not have TC/ESP, only the top model, known here as JLX..tech in the USA, I think. Those with ESP have a opt out button on the center console. as seen in wife's sister's 2012 SX4 JLX.

Regarding mpg, check fuelly or similar site for some real world mileages. Mine is 24 - 32 mpg, average 28 mpg.

....useful if you specify model , engine type, AWD or not, AUTO or manual, and driving conditions so we do not compare apples and oranges

Honestly, the Corolla is a tough car to beat as far as cheap basic and reliable transportation goes. It is also easily serviceable, there's a ton of them out there, etc.

I've seen a bunch of SX4s with timing chain noises, and then there are some people who buzzed past 300,000 miles without the least bit of troubles in that area. For all I know, it is a result of not maintaining the oil.

Servicing an SX4 isn't a big deal. if something in the AWD goes ca'put, all you have to do is remove the drive shaft to the rear end and drive it in 2wd. It is a pretty simple system and as long as the fluid don't leak out or something like that, they're good to go. It is pretty rare to have a problem in that department with the exception of the U-joints on the propeller shaft, which requires some cleverness to defeat. but then, any AWD Asian car is going to have some trickiness in that department.

Getting parts is a little tricky, but so far not impossible. It isn't like a Ford Taurus where the salvage yards are littered with spare parts galore. They are also well built enough to where you're not constantly replacing stuff.

If I lived in a cheap apartment somewhere, I'd stick with another Corolla. But I own six vehicles and 2 motorcycles, I have a car hoist in my garage, etc, so if one breaks, I always have another to drive. So, I am not worried about my SX4 being down. So far, it really never has been with the exception of me trying to diagnose why the car ate through its last serpentine belt so quickly. Long story.
