Default Heat shield

A few days ago my sx-4 stared to make an awful noise, when I check the bottom of my car I found the exhaust heat shield torn. Can I remove it? Or is necessary to have a replacement?

Use SS gear clams to restore and fix its position...

Philip suggestion is relevant. Immediate action depends on where you live..but since you did not fill up your profile, I do not know..
What I mean is with winter here, in my place, I would not feel in a hurry but if this is the shield in the front of the engine (not too sure from the picture)...it does (would) insulate the exhaust heat from the radiators (coolant and A/C) , and in summer, I would not like not to have it. If that is at the back of the car, over the sideways muffler, same remark.
