Default Help with inspection results of 2007 SX4

Hello!
I have a 2007 SX4 hatchback with about 113,000 km that I'd been having issues with noises when at idle. I took it in (I don't have a regular mechanic so took it into a local one with good online reviews) and was told that it was the ac compressor. I saw that this seems to be a common issue with the early Sx4's and my ac had stopped working a few weeks before the noise started so it makes sense.
The technician said in the notes that there was rust around compressor pulley, play in pulley evident when noise gets worse. They also said that they noticed play in the water pump pulley and that both the ac compressor and the water pump need to be replaced. The total estimate was over $2100, where the ac compressor was $850 and needed 3 hours of work plus another hour to evacuate and recharge the ac system, and the water pump and parts were about $130 and 3.5 hours of work.
I'm very inexperienced when it comes to car repairs and was wondering if this seems reasonable? I'm likely going to get a second inspection, but has anyone had this work done and was the time and cost comparable to this? Online the air compressors appear much cheaper.
Also, are these necesary repairs? I don't mind not having ac (especially given that it won't be warm again for a long time here in Ontario) and can ignore the noise, but the garage told me that they both needed to be done and couldn't be left without damaging the rest of the system. However, of course they are looking at the profits and I don't want to get taken advantage of if they aren't necessary.
I really appreciate any help I can get here, or anyone else's experiences with these issues!

First - if the noise from the a/c compressor is present with the a/c switched off, it is probably the compressor clutch bearing, which can be replaced, in some cases without removing the compressor from the vehicle - get an a/c repair shop to give you an estimate.

Second - if your SX4 has the J20A engine - it should be possible to remove the compressor and fit a shorter belt (the one used on "non-a/c" SX4s) - please note - if you go this route, do not plan on "re-activating" the a/c in the future, it's going to cost you more in the long run.

3.5 hrs to replace the water pump seems excessive to me, but, to be honest, I'm not that familiar with the SX4, I know the pump bolts to the side of the J series engines, and on my Grand Vitaras, I recon an hour is more than adequate, but on those vehicles I have room to work, the SX4, being a smaller sedan/hatch with the engine mounted transversely may be more cramped for space and require more disassembly.

Thank you for responding fordem!

The noise is there when the a/c is off, so I'll take in it to an a/c repair place. Do you know if waiting a while to fix this would cause further issues or does it only effect the a/c? (I just graduated and am not in the financial place to pay that amount of money atm unless it's really necessary)

As for the water pump, it does look like it requires a lot of disassembly from what I've been reading online, but I haven't been able to find an approximate length of time.

Best advice,

Remove belt and spin the pulley, loosing a bearing could result in $$$
