if you just bought the car, don't worry about the gas consumption yet, it needs a few thousand miles to break in before you will notice an improvement, the ecu has to learn how you drive. also most of us have noticed that with the crossover, awd results in better mpg, along with doing oil changes with full synthetic and a decent brand filter. don't forget that simple things like an air filter, and some bolt on parts from RRM will boost your MPG and HP. just be patient. also the winter blend of gas will yield lower then expected mpg's.

Default 2008 manual crossover mileage

Howdy y'all,
Just another datapoint for what it's worth. Bought a 2008 sx4 "crossover" manual shift hatchback a month ago, and through 400 miles of driving in awd I've averaged 24.7mpg (according to the trip computer readout) in almost exclusively stop-n-go city driving. From looking at the trip computer in "real-time" mpg mode (a nifty thingie that still mesmerizes me between stoplights, since my previous car was a 15-year-old subaru), I think that the actual mpg you get is really sensitive to your specific driving patterns. If you stomp on the gas to the next stoplight, it'll suck. If you coast to stoplights and do most of your accelerating in third gear, it'll be decent. Still anticipating my first extended roadtrip, but to this point I've been pleasantly surprised with the in-town mpg.
Again, just a datapoint for what it's worth.

I just drove mine 1000 miles home from Salt Lake City to Calgary. It's a year old, manual shift, with 14000 miles on the clock. Fuel consumption wasn't great, but I couldn't figure it exactly as I forgot to record one of the gas fills.

I work for a lubricants manufacturer and had the car given "the treatment" when I got home. I've noticed that the engine oil additive has made the motor silky smooth, and really made a difference in the "lag" that it has when accelerating from low gear. I ran a fuel treatment through it as well.

I'll report back as to what sort of gas mileage it gets, after I run it out to the ski hill and back this weekend. I'm interested, as this is a common beef with these cars. Not that I bought it for the gas mileage, but if I can make it better, I'll be happy.

I just got my 08 about 2 months ago and at first I was only getting 28.4mpg, but after about 600miles I installed a K&N filter and took a 600mi road trip to Philly and my mpg jumped to about 29.6. I'm taking it in for my first oil change tomorrow and right now I am averaging 30.1.
