Default timing chain guide?

I was talking to a mechanic today who said at the last shop he worked at several sx4's had been in to repair because the timing chain had jumped the timing guide "a piece of plastic" which i assume holds the chain in place. he said these vehicles were between 120 000-160 000km and that it was easy to maintain so this wouldn't happen but if it did the engine had to be replaced and it would cost about $3000.

Does anyone know anything about this? possibly explain how to check if it's functioning properly and if not how to adjust it?

Plastics are used for the guide portions on MANY engine timing chain applications. Lack of proper oil change maintenance is the primary cause of failure, should it arise. I have nearly 300,000 miles on mine!

Early signs of failure is a constantly audible click / clack sound.
