Unhappy Catalytic converter trouble

I have an AWD 2012 Suzuki Kizashi that has approximately 129,000 miles. I have taken really good care of this car since purchasing it in 2014 with only 24,000. It seems awful early for the converter to be going bad. No recalls that I know of. The only major problem with this car has been having the heater core replaced last year. Does anyone have any insight as to why the converter could go bad so soon? Thank you.

Running too rich, check your fuel trims...

Thank you Philip. Do you know if this is easy to check and could it mean I may not have to replace the converter? I was quoted $2200 to get the catalytic converter replaced. A lot of money that I don't have.

Who diagnosed the bad converter and how?

What are the signs and symptoms?

You would need a LIVE DATA SCANNER... check with the dealer, the CAT may still be a warranty item..

The service engine light came on. I took it to the dealer that I bought it from and they ran the code. It showed the catalytic converter. He said he could clear it and it may never come back on again. I chose that option since he said this part isn't covered under warranty. I drove it for about 2-3 weeks and it came on again. I went to the auto store and had them clear the code. Thank you again for your assistance.

Unfortunately fixing/diagnosing by code is not the way to go, there are many reasons the CEL will illuminate for a CAT code... Usually netting the service department with cash...

You need to properly diagnose the issue, you will need the use of a LIVE DATA SCANNER, and/or a qualified diagnostician (not a dealer mechanic or part person)..

Most cat codes are only indicative its not functioning correctly, the usual cause is is something else, Sure replacing the cat may (not saying it will either, seen codes come right back after a new cat is fitted) make things go away for a while, but the underlying cause of the issue will still be there

Thank you one and all for your advice. Would you all know if I took it to someone with a live data scanner, does the service engine light need to be one to get an exact diagnosis or can I just take it in ?

Again. the CEL is just an indicator of issues that the ECU is not happy with..

The key to your success is a competent diagnostician that can fix without guessing and throwing parts,

What is your location.

What is the ECU? Sorry...I have not car knowledge. I was looking up articles about the CAT code. Its mentioned everything that all you kind people have told me about, including fuel trims, checking the front and rear 02 sensors, and well as the mass flow air sensor. I was looking back at the service records on my car and the MFA was replaced last December. I have had all my service done at the dealer where I bought my car partly because I am still paying for this car and I like the service department. I am located near Frankfort, KY
