Default 88 Samurai Stalling and dash lights shut off

Hi, I recently removed my stock carburetor and replaced it with a MY-SIDE1 CV carb kit. Once I got that up and running I started having problems with it stalling after driving for about 10 minutes or so. It seems to stall when I'm driving no matter what speed or RPM, it just sputters and dies and the dash lights go off. The ignition coil fuse isn't blown I just seem to have to wait a while and it starts up fine. Any hints on what to look for to resolve this problem?

Just because you put a new carburetor i tend to think something is wrong their but that one statement you make about the dash lights going out doesn't coincide with carb problems.
Take a volt meter (multitester) and with the engine off check it at the battery and voltage should be 12.6+ volts and then start it up and test it with all light off. It should read 13.5+ volts.(lights on it reads less)
I just had an alternator go bad on me and it did almost the exact same thing as the regulator in the alternator was defective and going between charge at a high rev to no charge at anything less..... It's a free test so you have nothing to lose.

Well I did spill a bunch of coolant all over and in the alternator when I replaced my intake manifold. But the engine seems to keep running when I removed the negative lead from the battery. I do have a spare alternator, I was hoping to not have to put it in though, and I'm not sure if it even works or not.

So I borrowed a multitester and tested the battery and got 12.6V with it off and about 14.5V with it running...

battery and charging system are fine...... not sure why the dash lights are going out but the next test i would do would be to pull the fuel filter (on mine it's under the frame towards the rear) take it out and blow thru it..... if you have the slightest bit of resistance change the filter because what happens is it swells up even more in use and can't feed the carburetor. you could also pump some of that gas into a glass container and let it sit overnight to see if there's any water in the fuel

Shouldn't be any water in the fuel tank, haven't driven through any rivers recently. I have a fuel pressure regulator set up with my new carb, I'm going to try adjusting that a bit to give me a bit more fuel. I'll check the filter while I'm at it.

A bit more info: after it stalls and the lights go out, sometimes if I turn the key to "off" and turn it back to "on" the lights come back on, but when I try to start it they immediately go out and it doesn't start either. I was playing around with the ignition timing as well, could that have something to do with it?

Not sure where you live but when i lived in the northeast on the ocean my boat had to be filled with gas for the winter otherwise the empty tank would sweat inside and condensate water into the fuel

When you blow thru the fuel filter if your cheeks bow out at all you have restriction

Nope..... everytime i had those symptoms it was always bad connections...... next time your dash lights go out turn your headlights on and hit the key to make the headlights go out..... then go out by the battery and twist the connection at the battery and hopefully the lights will come on and you found the problem..... It could also be the connection at the starter or the ground cable at the frame..... I'm banking on this as the problem as i had this happen many times to me over the years.....there's also a smaller wire coming off the positive side of the battery....follow that to be sure it's all in good shape.
this is all fre stuff i'm giving you to try first before spending money on guesses

Well I think I may have found the problem. It looks like water is leaking down from somewhere into my fuse box. I pulled a few fuses and they were soaked. All the wires and connections seem to be solid, this is probably whats making this not work...

That does sound like our on to something....... next time the dash lights go out tap around in there with the back side (plastic handle) of a screwdriver and see if the lights kick on ...... after you dry it out soak it up with a wd-40 as that dries out wet wires.

Yeah that seemed to solve my problems. This vehicle has a ton of holes in it. My fuel filter was super clogged as well so I replaced it. I'm quite sure my electrical problems are solved now, now I just have to get my carb set up properly and running good.
