Default Idle Unstable - I need Help, Please

I admit...I am completely new to all of this...However, I just bought a Suzuki Samurai from the people my dad sold it to YEARS ago. It is an 1989. My dad passed away and when I heard it was for sale I bought it. I took it to get smogged and they wouldn't run it because the idle isn't stable. It doesn't stay in the green zone for more than five seconds. The guy said to get online and ask around...So that is what I am doing. Anyone have this problem before and know of a way or ways to fix it? Any help on making sure it passes smog? When Idling it idles high and then low and alternates back and forth. It doesn't have a stable idle. Thank you so much for your help!
