Default '87 Samurai Front End Clunking

Trying to diagnose source of clunking from left front on my new-to-me '87. It occurs when riding over rough terrain offroad, as well as bumps on road. Is there a known source of clunking that is considered notorious for the Samurais? The steering linkage has up & down play and I can make it clunk by hand but does nto seem to be the source. I don't think its wheel bearings, which leaves the shocks. The Samurai has about a 3" spring over lift, whith what appears to be original shocks. This clunking is independant from bump stop "bumping", which does occur. It is a different metal on metal clunking noise. Could a worn shock be the source? If not, any ideas?

Found the source of the clunking. Its where the pitman arm attaches to the steering gearbox via a shaft that goes up inside it. There's about 3/4" play that clunks when riding over bumpy / rough terrain. Now the question is, can I repair it or do I need to replace the steering gearbox?
