Default 88 Samurai clutch replacment

I'm going to replace the clutch. I only see four bolts on the bell housing, two on top, two on bottom. Is that it? Any tips or tricks on doing this job?

There are several theards on here about how to do this. A search will give you alot of information. I replaced my clutch last year and I had remove my trans completly. Easy coming out....not so easy going back in. Others will say that the clutch can be replaced without removing the trans. I would like to witness that some time. If I ever do it again, I will support the engine and slide it forward as far as I can. You will get all kinds of opinions and suggestions from folks on here. When you get into it you can use the ones you want. Good luck.

Gizmo's right. Pulling the trans is the easiest way. But don't forget to pull the starter or you will be scratching you head after pulling the four main bolts and it still doesn't move.

Your biggest problem when dropping the trans is clearing the rear trans mount. I trimmed mine just enough to leave some meat for the attachment bolts (for the trans mount), and that worked well. But then I got the opportunity to try a new upgrade part and just hacked it out and replaced the rear crossmember with a high clearance version - problem solved.

Billjohn or anyone,

I cannot get my tranny to have enough clearance to remove!

I have tried all I know to do........

I have tried searching this forum, but cannot find a step by step way to do it.

You are right, the cross member is in the way.

What can I do?

Please, if you have any info, please advise. I can't make it work.

You need to "notch" the transmission cross member. Supposedly the notch should be the size of 1/4 a quarter. I have the the 1.6L adapter plate and I had to cut off about 1/3" all the across to get my tranny to drop. As long as you leave enough to not open up the center hole, you should be OK.

Well, thanks Haptown! I did it, and I did it full blown. I was so mad at that stupid thing. Here is what I did with my little metal saw:




YEAH!!

The square end block of the tranny slid right down between my cuts.

You guys are right, no way to do it except with the notch. Or in my case the big U!

Cutting and bending the metal actually retained some of the strength in the mount. Whether that was the intention or not, it was a great idea!

Thanks Billjohn! I wasn't sure, but just thinking about it, it made sense to me. I thought it would be a lot harder to bend the 3/8 or so that is at a 90 degree angle, than it would be to bend a flat, thin piece. By folding it down, it is almost like the tranny would have to bend the whole 3/8 piece.

And, as a plus, I wanted to be able to allow the whole square end of the tranny to slip through. It came right out with ease after that.

You can be sure that when these Sammys were assembled at the factory, they were dropped in, engine and tranny as a unit!

I put a petro works clutch in a few years ago and I did support the rear of my engine...Ive had my trans out twice actually and it went smooth both times...I didnt have to cut anything but can see how this may help though...
