Default Samurai haggling help

Hi it's me again, still trying to get a Sammy without someone else buying it out from under me first! Having to wait until the weekends to look/buy is killing me...

Would like your thoughts on this one, it's been posted twice and he's lowered the price by $200 already. I was thinking of offering $2000 and was curious if that seems good for this one (and assuming the rust isn't too bad):

suzuki samurai

88 suzuki samurai 4x4

Just in case the link doesn't work here's the ad text:

Has rust but as u can see in pics looks good. Have title. Interested in trades. would like toyota 4x4. but open to all offers.

THose stock fender flares can hide alot of rust. If the fenders are gutted (see the rust coming through over the flare) then you will have alot of work to make it whole again. Around here I wouldn't offer more then 1250. Don't know what they go for where you are.

At least the seller is upfront on the rust. Just poke around and see where the rust is. Look underneath and see if there is evidence of trail use. Look at the front and rear pumpkin for rock hits. If minor it probably was not used heavily.

I like the fact that the doors are already set to come off. That work is done already for you if that was in the works. The front locker is a very nice thing to have.

Go to eBay and go to advanced search and see what has sold.

Subtract what tires would cost or something close to that amount as a starter. Remember, Sami’s are a hot item so the price can be more than a Kelly Blue Book price. Oh yea, check Kelly Blue Book for prices also.

Your best unit would be one that was a tow behind a motor home or something bone stock, at least you know it was not messed with. Do not get too emotional with the car; there are always more around the corner.

Did you already have a budget? Stay within it, and remember, you will be out another $400 or more for decent tires.

No, I don't really have a budget, but less than $3000 for a stock one seems like a good deal. I talked to him on the phone today and we're going to go see/buy it tomorrow. I got some better pics and there is a small rust hole on the back fender, and he says there is one in the back seat area on the fender also. Maybe just needs a little TLC body work to stop the rust. Other than that it runs good, he put a lot of new parts and turns out is selling it to pay for a new roof (in KS we had a bad hailstorm not to long ago), so I feel bad about offering less than the $2300 price. Overall if it's not a rust bucket when I get there I'll probably buy it since Sammys in KS seem to price $5k for slightly modded and $3k for stock. It's a bummer living in the midwest, snow means salt and rust... yuck!

Quick update:

Well that turned out to be a bust!

"some rust" means "there's a 1 x 1' hole in the back corner". I wish I had taken a pic of it, and the overall rust elsewhere was rough too.

Sigh... Back to the search!

Keep looking, each time you check out a Sami, you get a little smarter on what to look for.

suzuki samurai

So far this one looks fantastic and just what I wanted, no mods at all! Even has A/C, although good luck for me finding R12. Price seems a little steep, what do y'all think?

If everything the guy says is true, it's probably not that over priced. A good running Sami with no carb problems will save a few bucks right off the bat. R12 freon is still available, at least from the AC shops around here. Check over the door handles, locks, window regulators, window track rubber, weather stripping, heater fan motor, wiper motor and such. Replacing those little things adds up in a hurry. A working gas gauge would be nice, too, as most of them with more than 100k are worn out. Looks like from the pictures all the rocker trim and bumper ends are still attached. If all the little bits are in good shape and still there. I'd think seriously about making a deal for it. Seems like the mechanical hard parts are less of a cost and hassle to replace than all that little stuff we forget to look at.
Good Luck

Got some close up pictures and it's definitely in GREAT shape. Only rust is on the hood hinges and a little bit around the battery box, nothing going through or even close to it... I'm pretty convinced at this point it's worth about what he's asking.

Looks real nice.

If you want to buy R12 legally, Go here;
EPA 609 Open Book Certification

Take the open book test and get your 609 certification. I got mine from them about 15 years ago.

Then it is legal to buy R12. It's on ebay all the time.
