Default Help Plz Jimny is drefting!

hi all
my wife got 2009 jimny and now im getting another one for me. a freind of mine got 1999 jimny and he wants to sell
the car is ok but im worried about something that he told me about
a few days ago he was driving quite speed and a car suddnly stopped and he tryied to break his car but it went drefting. i dnt know! i have 2009 mazda three with abs ebd break and it can never happen even if im on high speed!
so what i wanna ask:
is it a break desk proplem or even break pads or is it suspention parts peroblem or it is a direction wheel's problem

im asking coz i trying to avoid a car with a critical problem.
and also wht is the most important things i have to check in this car to calm about it as a good car?

What do you mean by "drefting"?

Did the Jimny suddenly pull to the right or left when stopping? This might be caused by uneven brake pad wear, a stuck caliper or air in one of the brakelines. None of the above problems are big - they just need fixing.

If there was something wrong with your steering gear, the Jimny would start wandering off towards the side of the road when you release the steering wheel. The fix for this would be replacement of damaged or worn tierod joints, bent steering linkage or worn ball joints.

I think he means is started skidding. If you are acustomed to antilock brakes then this can be very alarming. The older vehicles like the Samurai do not have ABS and skidding is comon when doing a hard stop. The 99 jimny was equiped with ABS and it shouldn't break loose like that unless the ABS system is malfunctioning or the vehicle got sideways .

Maybe in some markets, none that I know of.

I would suspect a sticking brake caliper or even badly inflated tyres, warped discs aren't unknown on these models.

do you stop faster skidding, or coming to a quick stock w/o skidding?

I should have elaborated further. ABS was an option in the 99 JLX model (don't know if that was the first year or not) It wasn't standard equipment untill 2008.

If the person who is selling the Jimny said it has ABS and it's a 2009 then it is possible that he's correct. ABS will prevent wheel lock up, and if it doesn't then there's something not working with the ABS system. Check and make sure that the vehicle actually has ABS though, especially if it's a critical selling point for you.

I bought a Jimny new in 2003 there was no option for ABS then and I'm sure there wasn't back in 1999 either. the car being sold is a 99 and ABS wasn't mentioned.

That would depend on several factors - but - generally speaking, if you can apply the maximum possible braking effort without locking the wheels up (known as threshold braking), the vehicle WILL come to a stop in a shorter distance than it would if the wheels were locked up.

In most cases, with any reasonable braking effort that does not lock the wheels, the vehicle will stop in a shorter distance than it would with the wheels locked, but it will depend on how hard the vehicle is braked.

With locked wheels you also have NO directional control, and the vehicle will slide in whatever direction the momentum takes it - so skidding to a stop is generally not a good idea..

all the ones I see with ABS are the JLX models that had power windows, power steering, and automatic transmissions.

guessing is hopeless, imo

open hood, (see attachment) see ABS modulator, bingo for ABS.

then talk. hahahaha


braking
skidding.

skidding increases stopping distances
this is caused by the loss of traction from the foot print of the tire to the asphalt.
the rubber gets hot and melts. melted rubber acts like grease on the road. and melted rubber can no longer bite in to the rough road surface.
ABS prevents the skid by monitoring wheel RPM and then modulating brake line pressures to stop the skidding.

on a NON ABS car, skid control is between the ears. LOL
