Default 11.91 volts out of alt ??

Hey Guys

My alt is putting out 11.91 volts even at hi revs...with all lights and H fan.
Changed out alt with buddies spare...also puts out 11.92 volts.
These alts both have internal regulator tag on them.
Does my ECU control the output ?
This reading is at battery posts and also live wire in cab.
Can there be 2 alts with the same low output ?
Could this be why my yellow top Optima died ?

Still worried about eliminating my ECU...can't find name on donor carb.
Giving that idea a rest for now.

check the voltage AT the alternator. If there is a short anywhere between the alternator and the battery, or if your battery is toasted, it will affect any reading you take at the battery or after the battery. The voltage is regulated by the alternator internally. It should be putting out over 14 volts if it's charging the battery.

First measure the voltage between the alternator (+) output post and the alternator case, NOT the chassis. If it's over 14V, then go chasing around to find out where the bad connection(s) are that are causing you to lose voltage while charging. If it's not over 14V, then it's likely your alternator is bad. The regulator is an internal part of the alternator, so you replace both together. Many/most alternator places will test yours at no charge.

You should also consider an overnight battery charge until you fix the Zuk's wiring problem. Less-than-12V is not charging the battery properly, and you may need to replace it, if you cannot keep it properly charged (I hope it's not already too late). One other possibility is that you have a shorted cell in the battery. Make sure your battery is good before going much further.

the first rule of the charging system is you have to have a good battery. a bad battery can cause all sorts of goofy readings.

to check for restance in wiring , hook volt meter between positive post at battery and battery stud post of alt. . run engine with a load on alt (ie. head light on, blower motor on high, ect.). any reading above 0.2 volts is a bad connection in wiring.
second step is to repeat test except now the volt meter will be between the negative post of battery and the case of the alt. any reading of above 0.2 volts is a bad connection in the ground side.

check the two small wire connector at rear of alt. both wires should show 12 volts with key on.

these alts. also have field terminal on regulator. to test, hook volt meter to system voltage . ground one end of a test lead and the other is inserted in hole in rear of alt and contacts field terminal of regulator. ( the hole in rear of alt is labeled with an F. It is easer if you attach test lead to a small screw driver and then insert that into hole) if voltage raises when regulator is grounded , replace regulator. if voltage remains same replace alt.
