Default thru with the ECU

hey guys!
Is it possible to by pass the ECU in my 88/Sami
A buddy has a stock older carb without ECU connections.
Will I just put it on ?
What will I compromise if I take out the ECU entirely ?
I do not have to get tested for anything here.
Just keep insurance on it and run it.
That ECU is constantly causing trouble...sends false signals and
makes me uneasy.
Just heard that an offroad buddy just had his fail. We had to drag him home on a rope...not a good end to the day.
Not easy to find a replacement either.
Anyone done this ? Read most of the references to ECU in this forum and found nothing.

You'll need the complete intake manifold, carb, distributor and coil as well as a low pressure fuel pump so you'll probably have to replace the fuel tank from an earlier carb model.
Older carbs can be more trouble than EFI, you would be better off checking the connections on the wiring and getting the capacitors in the ECU replaced.

theres an ebay seller that repairs them for like 75 bucks or something. you have to send it in and he fixes it and sends it back.

The carb has a few things on it that are controlled by the ECU. There's the evap cold start mechanism, then the idle jet micro switch, and of course the secondary throttle plate and the high idle plunger. There's also the EGR system, but that's not technically part of the carb itself. You can run without the ECU but you don't get your secondarys, your idle jets, your load/idle compensator or your cold start solenoid. You would have to run it with the idle up all the time and a slightly rich mixture to keep it from backfiring too much on closed throttle decelleration. If you want to run it without the ECU then you should use a carb that's completely mechanical. They aren't as efficient, but you will get your secondarys and you'll have an off throttle compensator.

Whether or not your carb has an ECU will depend on your location and the age of the donor, many markets didn't have any of that stuff fitted.

I know the hitachi in the US market did. The aisin had an electronic fuel cut and idle up but it's secondaries and idle jets were mechanical.

I was thinking he had a modified Hitachi I know that there are people that bypased the ECU by taking out the switches and closing off the ports etc. But it's definitely possible that he's got hold of an Aisin. I don't know of a samurai carb that was 100% mechanical.

Thanx Guys for the quick response.
My existing carb is driven by the ECU.
The donor I'm looking at is out of an unmodified 87 with no ECU. It does have some electronic components connected to the choke mechanism.
It apparently will bolt on without modification.
Thanx Rhinoman for the info re EFI...another buddy was interested in that.
However...if there is not anything other than electronic control and test feedback relying on the ECU then it sounds like I can delete that 'nightmare going somewhere to happen' and go back to the mechanical supports of the older generation Sami.
I will determine if it is Aisin or Hitachi and get back on here with that.
Getting an ECU repaired is good for anyone living in the USA but a bigger problem with anyone outside who tries to get any electronic device mailed into the USA...something to do with 9/11.
There is also the time delay of turnaround mail service (up to 30 days).
Appreciate all the comments and perhaps I can sell my no longer needed ECU.

Hey Guys,

So checked the intended donor carb ...cannot find the name brand...asin or hitachi...but did find a tag with numbers on it hanging down under the air cleaner plate...#83030.
It looks clean and has good rubber hoses hanging off it...not perished or cracked.
If it will let me disconnect the dreaded ECU...well nuff said.
Can swap it for a couple my possibles...so not a big expense.
Is that enough info Baratacus ?
What do u think about excluding ECU BillJohn ?

If it looks like this its the Aisin carb. It still depends on some external electric components that aren't mounted on the carb, but control vacuum pressure to the carbs vacuum system. (idle up actuator opperated by the threeway vacuum switch... etc)

Should be a direct bolt on in place of the hitachi, but less dependant on the ECU so you won't need a lot of the electric connectors that are directly connected to the carb. Only need the fuel cut connector I think .


If it doesn't look like the picture I posted, maybe you could post a pic of the carb to help identify it. I can't find anything on #83030
