Default SJ 51 has hot flushes

Hi all,

I have an 1987 SJ51 Sierra that has developed hot flushes.

When I start off driving the engine warms up as per usual then about 20K down the road the temp gauge starts climbing. It swings to about 3/4 of the gauge, then quickly comes back to half way. It doesn't do it again for the remainder of the trip (45 minutes). When I stop and allow it to cool down, the process is repeated when heading home again.

It looks like it loses coolant via the overflow bottle overfilling.

Any ideas what causes this.

It could be that you need a new radiator cap, another cause could be a bad thermostat or maybe you radiator needs internal cleaning
