Question Bloody confused Jimny buyer looking for support!

Hi Folks,

Total newbie in the Suzuki world but my Yaris T-Sport no longer meets my requirements and its time to move on.

Looking to obtain a Suzuki Jimny, but the more I look at them the more confused I get!

Any chance some of you knowledgeable peoples could solve a few mysteries for me?

Why does the 2004 Mode model seem to live in a higher tax band than the rest of them? It appears to be 2 tax bands above the latest models and 1 above the older models. Are there any advantages to go with the extra expense, like extra power?

Are the electronic transmission selectors on the new models just as reliable and unbreakable as the manual ones on older models? I don't like the look of them but I think that may be my Dad's DNA speaking...

Is there any reason that I shouldn't go for a pre March 2001 model to avoid paying silly tax?

Probably the most important question. It seems that the cam belt should be changed at 56000 miles or 6 years and yet most of the Jimnys I've looked at don't appear to have had it done regardless of mileage and age. Is it an unnecessary way of getting main dealers some pocket money are are the previous owners just lazy and lucky?

Sorry to enter the forum asking so many questions. I promise that I'll post exciting pictures of the damage when I have my first accident...

Pre 2000 models are pretty cheap these days, if you can get one rust free with low miles then it would be worth looking at.
The cambelt should def. be changed, a lot of damage can be cause dif it lets go and its not too expensive to do either.

Thanks for your reply and excellent links. I guess I'll be budgeting some moolah to change the cam belt on any Jimny I buy.

Arnold Clark is currently advertising a 1.2l Jimny with 154g co2 emissions. That's got to be bull, right?

I've no idea, my ex bought a 2003 Jimny O2 new, tax wasn't CO linked in those days. It was a good little motor, it was mainly used for commuting, top down through the Surrey B Roads, we took it off road a few times and we even went up to Inverness in it. It took us nine hours to get from Wycombe to Edinburgh, using A, B and unclassified roads only, although we did take a big diversion to see the Angel of the North as well. The O2 had a G13BB engine which is OK but a little dated, Mike Lines at BigJimny.com knows more about the later M13A engines.

Nice picture!

The state of Edinburgh at the moment it could take you nine hours to drive across it. Bloody trams!

Think I'm going to end up with a 2001 Jimny. Just need my seven days of work to be over so that I can go and negotiate its release from the dealer

It's amazing how much the value of Jimnys (and all 4x4s I suppose) hikes up in such conditions. I bought my 2003 model for 2800 just under a year ago - Really low mileage, and driven by a city girl who probably never even touched the 4x4 selector lever!

Similar Jimnys right now on eBay and Autotrader are going for 1000+ on top...
