Default New to Sammy: Excited w/ questions

Hey everyone.

Recently purchased an '87 sammi. A rough runner, but figured it would be a good summer project.

Story:
On the trip back home, one of the u joints on the half shafts broke causing it to bang up against my transmission, mainly the shifter casing.

Needless to say, the shifter is junk now.

Questions:
Will a 4 wheel drive tranny from a Sidekick/Tracker bolt up? Or will it have to be from another sammy?

Any other sammy weak links that I can sort out while under the hood so to speak?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum Brent. Haven't been on here very long myself. I obtained my 88 Sami about a month ago and still thrashing on it. There are a few weak links. I will try to help as much as I can. The first thing is to read up on the vehicle. This forum is helpful....lots of knowledge here. If your having a problem, chances are that sombody else has seen the same thing. A good place for knowledge is Ack's FAQ Suzuki Sidekick and Geo Tracker 4X4 offroading information I don't know how many miles your vehicle has or how it has been treated, but as you probably know you will need to check/replace the U-Joints. If the Trans shifter feels loose or sloppy the shifter sheet is worn out and needs replaced. My sheet was almost gone and the retainer bolt was broken in half. I ordered my kit from LOWRANGE OFFROAD. I bought the brass kit that comes with (Retainer bolt, and shift sheets for both transmission and transfer case) $33.00 The installation is easy. I don't know if you already own, but a good set of Metric tools is a must. This being a forgien vehicle....you won't find a standard bolt on it. A can of WD-40 is also a must. Don't want to strip or round off any bolts because they are also Metric.

Ther are lots of parts places listed and I don't work for or sponser them in any way, but here are some I have delt with.

the sidekick/tracker transmission isn't geared for the little 1.3L samurai engine. You could gear down the ring and pinion on your differentials but that wouldn't correct the gearing so that your shift points would be at the correct RPMs. If you plan on doing the 1.6L engine swap in the future then now would be a good time, since you could do the engine and transmission as one unit. If you don't plan on an eventual engine swap, then stay with a samurai transmission.
